Id like to put a 500gb HDD into my slim 120gb which is running evilnat however i dont want to lose my games and saves already installed onto my CFW. As things take so long to install on the PS3, is it possible to perform some kind of backup and keep my data when installing the new drive? Really not looking foward to installing 100+gb of PS3/2/1 games all over again...

This guide might help too:-

Okay, so i can use an external HDD of larger capacity to 'backup' my data using the PS3 system software, then insert the new HDD and restore it via the PS3 and it should retain all my custom firmware installed games and saves?

PS3 backup tool is crap, slow, and won't even transfer all the important data, like your account activation data, some of your savefiles, among others.

Just follow this guide and you should be able to save all the important data: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/ultimate-userdata-backup-guide.29037/

System Backup contains almost all data but not restoring all. Games, cache, dlc and patches plus all saves, including those with copy prohibited parram it will be restored - but only on the same console on which copy has been made.

But it is slow as turtle because compressing already compressed data in majority cases, plus encrypting it, plus sending via USB 2.0. Not to mention that it does not allow user to choose what he want backup/restore and if something goes wrong in the middle, user will not be informed.

That's crap. I totally agree.

A homebrew backup tool that could package everything (or you could setup in options) would rock (transfering via FTP or to a USB drive). But it takes time and skill.

Packing is waste of time (but for FAT32 it would be mandatory). Besides that, You cannot tell FTP client what to download, and exFAT/NTFS support write is not stable. Such app would be crippled by design. ;]

Apollo can pack all saves, trophies and licenses for one user.

If You have CFW, just use PS3 HDD Decryption Helper.
