There are over a 100 different modchips made for the system so I wanted to see which one is generally considered the best
I thought that the modchip was an invention by those who modified the PS2 when perhaps they installed something else. I remember someone with a modification to the PS2 (according to him there was a chip installed in the PS2) inserted burned CDs and the PS read them. You would be safer by going with FMCB instead.
And I cannot speak of modchips since I have never used them. I've heard adding in extra hardware like modchips, at least on some consoles, can shorten their lifespan.

That's rather not possible. For sure not today.inserted burned CDs and the PS read them.
I honestly forgot about those, I have speedrunner syndrome so I wouldn't know (basically can't play anything that is faster than ps2 fd because my run will get rejected)We all shitting on them because it is source of problems, due their design. We need modern one which can take all current knowledge, so ultimate one (from thread title) could be forged. So what El_Isra said is sadly true. Freedom of homebrew or a handy way to run any disc. Choose Your poison.
Anyway. Superior modchips from times of their glory were: DMS4 (all), Matrix Infinity, Ghost 2 and Crystal Chip 2.0.
PS: And no, it isn't. You have emulators like POPStarter and PS2PSXe, and PS1DRV replacement known as DKWDRV (not only for Decards).
why not today? That's rather not possible. For sure not today.
Because today we have not any exploit allowing to boot from CD discs on not modded and not exploited console. In future? Maybe. For PSX there is some works which I don't even understand, ^^ for PS2 CD games, something should targeting CDDA handling or as in case of PSX newest hack, maybe the same would be possible for PS2. But current status is that, nothing like that is possible(availble).why not today?
If it were for the PS2, you would need to burn the CD for each game. In my opinion it is easier to have a library mounted on a hdd that the ps2 would have access to. I'm not an expert on these things I still have to find out but, in your opinion, compared to the current methods of modified ps2, the possible new way of burning games on CDs and using them from there, would it be better than the other present mods?Because today we have not any exploit allowing to boot from CD discs on not modded and not exploited console. I think, if there isn't a benefit in terms of loading or anything else in using the cd, i don't see the point in having to waste time burning a game into a cd.You asked why no today and I answered. I didn't debate which is better or worst method, but what is possible and what isn't. ;]
