PS3 What to look for when buying a CECHA01?

I'm new to owning a Playstation 3, specifically a CECHA01 so I can play PS2 games, and I was looking to buy a refurbished one, as I probably wouldn't be able to do the delidding and such myself. I found one with a APS 226 PSU, the RSX and CPU delidded, and the 19 blade fan installed. Would this be good enough for it not be fail, or should I look for one with NEC Tokins replaced as well?

AFAIK the capacitors should be replaced since they are known to fail all over the place (PS3, Notebooks, ...) but this isn't really a hard job to do either so... you could also swap'em out by yourself IMO

I have a soldering iron but, not gonna lie, I don't trust myself to not break something.

CECHA01 is a very neat console... it's a literally a PS3 with a full PS2 inside.
However, if you consider that these consoles have +15 years, that they were not built to last, that they consume more than twice the power of a PS3 slim (hence produce more heat) and NAND can be bricked more easily than NOR, and the price of these models generally are higher than slims; I would consider to buy a real PS2 + PS3 slim (25xx that is CFW compatible or a 21xx or 20xx if you cannot confirm if CFW is supported).

PS3 slims are better in all the considerations above and can play most PS2 games with none or very few glitches if a CONFIG is used.

Main reason I want a CECHA01 is to play PS2 games faithfully with the fully digital HDMI output the PS3 has.

Ok so I have two of them a CECHA & CECHB (my baby) if you are dead set on a BC model the semi-BC have a better picture then the full hardware. And will play a vast majority of the games between it and PS2 CONFIG files these are ethe CECHC/CECHE models. But I paid to get a 40mm RSX installed as the factory is 90mm. They delidded the system while there and the NEC Tokin are done. Did the PSU swap from a 40gb model and my system runs as cool as my slim now. It's a few $$$ but worth it if you really want one. I had no choice but to slim down my systems. It is only my CECHB, PS5 & PSTV hooked up nowadays.

I've read the B looks better, but the A supports more games, so I think I'd still want to go with that.

That is definitely not true they are exactly the same in compatibility. I even added wifi to mine.

Only thing my CECHB can't do my CECHA can do it use the multi card reader. The C/E have slightly lower compatibility but look better. As they come run about 85% of the games. Using CONFIG files you can then play about 90-95% of them. The A & B are identical after you populate the hardware and a single byte swap you have the ability to use wifi & SD cards etc.

Ah, gotcha. I think I'm still kinda dead set on an A though lol
