Which modchip is this? (SCPH-30004R)

I picked up an SCPH-30004R PlayStation 2 for very cheap with a disc read error issue. I replaced its faulty KHS-400C laser with a KHS-400B that I had laying around from a 30003 console, and it reads any disc type. I tried a burnt copy of Grand Theft Auto III, and to my surprise it read it just fine as well. I read articles about KHS-400B not fitting in a 30004R console, but with some minor modifications it works just fine (400B is thicker than 400C) So I was wondering, this console has to be equipped with some modchip of some kind, and I opened it up further, just to clean it nicely if I already opened it up, and this is what I found:

What parasite is grown to my PS2's motherboard? As I can tell, some pins aren't even connected, but region-free and burnt DVD-s/ CD-s work just fine. Thanks :)

Can chips still be had though? My favorites were the Matrix Infinity and the DMS4 Pro.
I dont know what you meant with that question but today those chips are old gen. Modbo 5 has it all and more. i use modbo 5 wxclusively only and there is no one single problem.

Expected that they're old. Just thought the focus would be more on the current generation consoles. Had no idea you could still get chips for the PS2.

Thanks for the replies. I find it interesting, that a chip this old still works, what's concerning is that the old laser was burnt out, but probably it was heavily used. The PS2 works fine with this chip as of now, and the 400B laser is doing its thing. Interestingly the chip is not FreeMcboot compatible, as I tried to program the EEPROM with Lenschanger ELF for a KHS-400B but the console just doesn't boot with a FreeMcBoot card inserted. And it reads any disc without the reprogramming even though it's a different laser. If the chip fails some day, I will replace it with a modbo, probably if I can desolder the old one without any damage, but until then, this is fine :D

I had done the DMS4 and Romeo mods on my PS2. If you're going to end up changing the chip - check if any of the wires go to somewhere you need first. If it's already connected just desolder from the chip instead of the board. Try PS2BBL since that seems far more compatible with mod chips.
