Will there be an open source modchip that is upgradable for the PS2? Like the Open Xenium modchip

Do you think there will be an open source modchip that is firmware upgradable? Like the Open Xenium mod chip for the Xbox but instead for the PS2?

I've installed many Modbo chips in PS2's but sometimes they just refuse to read import PS2 games for some odd reason. Even though my solder joints look fine. Perhaps these chips sometimes fail to flash the console properly even after going over my solder work multiple times. I tried to upgrade the firmware on my Modbo, but ended up killing the chip. I wish there was a readily available, better quality modchip with more features. Like the Matrix Infinity but open source. I don't understand as to why nobody has created an updated modernised modchip for the best selling console of all time.

Modchip in Xbox'es adding extremely useful features, unavailable to any softmods (like i.e working with dead RTC or working without ATA Password locked HDD). While modchips in PS2 adding only easy way to read CD/DVD-R, and on other hand, they are problematic with FMCB/FHDB 1.9xx line which is far way more handy than DEV.olutions Modes. I would say that modchips in PS2 are today almost completely useless. On top of that, maybe in future we even don't need modchips for autoboot disc backups thanks to upcoming Mechacon/Dragon hacks. Time will tell anyway. ;) Personally for me, modchips for PS2 are no longer needed.

I agree but i still prefer a modchip and being able to pop an import into the console and boot straight into it aswell introducing other features also they do work with FMCB just have to use a modchip friendly version. The problem i have is the current Modbo's aren't that good since they are clones. They are sort of hit and miss. And i feel like there should be a modern open source replacement.

I still use modchip and i prefer them over fmcb. For me modchip is way better solution.

@Luisile Depend what You using. If You heavily using PSX and/or PS2 backups or imports, then it is most handy solution due to autodetect and no needs of any patching stuff. That's no doubt. But if You prefer easy way to launch various of homebrew and games, especially from HDD, then modchip turns into ball chained to leg because of dirty patching of firmware.

@psydefx Fortuna and it's forks are for peoples which cannot use FMCB/FHDB. It is annoying because of needs to travel through OSDSYS and keeps properly timestumping data, yet better than nothing.

Unlikely, because Modchips are about to become redundant!

Modchips also do NOT "flash" the console and are quite finicky regarding cable-length (at least some of them).

For one... Please stop multi-posting and learn that the edit-button is there for a reason.

Second... Would you mind explaining WHY or FOR WHAT you prefer chips over FMCB/FHDB?
Just "because I like them" is NOT a valid cause/reason.
