You should be able to update directly to cfw. Make sure there is no disk in the drive and disconnect internet. Otherwise you might accidently install a higher ofw.

The advice to disconnect internet was meant only for the firmware updates ;) Like 1. Disconnect internet and update to 4.82 ofw (twice) 2. Connect internet and follow all exploit steps until you reach the point where you are supposed to install cfw. 3. Disconnect internet and install cfw.

There's a lot to read up in the links provided ;) Follow the steps carefully and you will install 4.82 ofw (twice) and any 4.82 cfw :) For retro games check out retroarch, I have used it but I'm far from being an expert on that.

I've been there too, but in my case I'm pretty sure the logic board was defective. Anyway, if he is on a regular debug (non-noBD) now, any cfw should work fine without the noBD patches :)

As long as the logic board is still connected there's no need for noBD ;)
