4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

Did you remember to apply the patch AFTER loading it (patching is a 2 step process)?
If so, were you invited by the Toolset to reboot and install a CFW after successful patch application?
If so, install CFW 4.90.
There is no risk involved in trying to install a CFW pup, if it fails, no harm done.

Alternatively you can check first whether or not your Flash memory has been patched successfully.

One way to do that is to load the Toolset, dump your Flash memory to a file on USB and analyse it with the latest pyps3checker from github.com/littlebalup/pyps3tools, the output logs will tell you if ROS0 and ROS1 have been patched. If so you can install CFW.

Another way is to load the Toolset and load the nofsm patch as if you were going to apply it again. Then you can compare the ROS0 hash, the ROS1 hash and the loaded patch hash, if the 3 hashes are identical, the patch has already been applied, if not, apply the patch using the context menu option, otherwise close the Toolset without applying the patch and install CFW.

Yes, I did the steps correctly and I just checked the dump.hex(before and after patch). The patched one does say it is on 4.90 patched and my old one said 4.90 CEX OFW/HFW. I ran your 4.90 CFW and the install worked (shows EVILNAT on startup) but in my settings, my software only says 4.90, not 4.90 evilnat or CFW anywhere. So, I dont know if CFW was installed correctly lol...do i run the patch again? or try playing an .iso game and see if it works?

The system information will not display if you are on CFW or HFW.

@Evilnat

Does HDD unlocker code relies on Cobra? If so can you move it to xai?

I can't use it on HEN

@Evilnat

If you have time, please can you take a look at paf.sprxs?

In the PSP days, we had a patch in the paf.sprx to change the XMB position (x,y.z axis) and Scroll Speeds

I wonder if we can achieve the Smooth Scroll Effect as the video below, we had a discussion here in 2017 but we didn't look further

Look between 12 and 15 seconds, the smoothness when scrolling XMB items

The console is now on CFW, there's nothing more to do.
Except maybe enable QA if it's never been done before and keep it enabled so you can downgrade at will, it can save your bacon in sticky situations..

Awesome! thanks for the help! Whats QA? my lowest firmware says 2.45 lol
And where do I put ps3 .iso games to play? I had them running through webman mod when I was on HEN
I dont need to convert .iso games anymore on cfw compared to HEN right? like no more adding license and stuff?

The QA (Quality Assurance) flag is officially only used on test systems in dev studios it enables access to the debug settings menu, and more importantly, allows installing firmware updates with version lower than the one currently installed, i.e., downgrade. Presumably this feature was used by QA testers in game studios to test their games on various firmware versions before release.
Since there's no harm in keeping that flag enabled that's what most CFW users do. Still, as of the time of writing this, there's no real reason to downgrade since Evilnat 4.90 has pretty much everything.
If your lowest firmware is 2.45 it means that even with the QA flag enabled you cannot install a firmware version lower than that (but why would you want to?)

The way to play ISOs is the same as in HEN - You should install webMAN MOD / multiMAN or both. The one key difference here is that on CFW webMAN MOD automatically starts when you boot the PS3.

Converting ISO games? I assume you mean PS2 games? Yeah, no need, just put the ISO in /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO and launch them with webMAN MOD.

And get your eid_root_key !

This is the first thing to do after installing CFW. Because only with this unique key you can decrypt your hdd and access your data... Among other things.
So get your key now, put it in a safe place and probably one day you will be happy that you did.
It only takes some seconds, but many people only think about doing this when it is already too late.
Now is always the right time.

Cheers

Alright sweet! I just enabled QA and dumped my eid root key thanks guys!
One odd thing left is I have a *Playstation3 folder above the *Package Manger folder. When I Click the *Playstation3 folder there's an error (80028F14). Is that leftover from HEN?

Edit: Also, to get on PSN, a warning says to disable CFW syscalls to sign in. Is this the usual method to get online and have less chance of getting banned?

That's the infamous App Home folder. It gets used to mount games to the PS3s internal filesystem. It's a virtual drive kinda thing. You get the error as long as nothing is mounted.

The ★ PlayStation3 icon on XMB is actually the game-debug folder also known as ★ app_home/PS3_GAME

That folder by default is unmapped. That's why you get the error 80028F14 when you click on it.

webMAN MOD uses that icon for different operations, like reload XMB, launch PSN games or mount ROMS.
Other backup managers, like IRISMAN use the icon to load backups when the bluray drive is broken.

I'd still suggest to rename it to Virtual Drive. That would be more self explanatory.
Maybe it's a better name. However it was renamed to ★ PlayStation®3 for various tacit reasons:
1-Although the original name ★ app_home/PS3_GAME is more precise, it was long and had poor aesthetic on XMB. This was the main reason why it was changed.
2-The new name is generic and doesn't require translation on the different languages supported by the console
3-Only PS3 games or apps can be launched by games-debug icon.
4-The name is similar to PlayStation®3 album. The star indicates that it is a debug feature.
5-This mod was originally implemented in multiMAN. The concept was retaken.

But just naming it PlayStation 3 seems to be too confusing. Maybe just naming it "App Home" would be the right thing.
That also wouldn't need to be translated as PlayStation Home was also used as a name worldwide.

Yes, these could be better names.
I only gave the reasons why that name a was chosen.
App_home is shorter too but it is as confusing as PlayStation3. Additionally App_home refers to a false path, since the debug icon in fact points to the original name app_home/PS3_GAME

In any case the name of the icon can be changed to anything that you prefer just editing explore_plugin_full.rco

I did already rename it to "* Virtual Drive" in my case in the various language files.

I was making a general suggestion because the current one explains nothing. I also asked myself if i did something wrong after i first installed it because it was just called PlayStation 3 and produced an error.

Maybe we need a new and/or a description under it, which should be possible for every entry on the XMB.

I know the final decision can only be made by @Evilnat
