PS2 790xx shuts off when lid is closed

I bought a cheap untested 79001 with an apparently dead optical drive, but when I opened it up to troubleshoot it I found out that the console shuts off when both lid sensors are pressed. It looks like one of the previous owners opted to just break off the pieces of the lid that pressed down the sensors and presumably play everything over ethernet. I could do this as well, but I was curious if there was a fix since there might be nothing wrong with the optical drive itself and I'd like to keep it fully functioning if possible.

The console only shuts off when BOTH sensors are pressed. According to the 700xx manual, which is the closest model I found documentation for, this signal goes to pin E1 on the Dragon chip, with a corresponding output pin E3 that seems to go nowhere.

The 79001 board is too different from the 700xx schematics for me to tell which pins are which, so I can't follow the traces, but there isn't anything visibly broken on or around the chip.

I only found one other instance of this:

Does anyone know more about this model? Is fixing this feasible or I am better off just playing over ethernet?
