Are the fat PS3's liked less than the later slim models?

After reading some posts on several websites, (this one excluded) it seems most people prefer the original slim model the most. Even some preferring the super slim to an original fat model.

They say the fat models are less reliable. The one I have is almost 14 years old and works without any issues aside from maybe some software introduced by CFW.

People also say similar things about the fat model 360's. Both of these two consoles I have were produced somewhere around mid 2008. The 360 I got was new. Though it is the second one as I accidentally knocked the first one over while playing a game (this was before the install game feature was introduced in a later firmware) and the disc drive got damaged where it would scratch discs while playing them. It had to be exchanged for another new one.

The fat PS3 I have was bought used in early 2021. It worked great then, and it works great now.

Is it that some people have issues with these models and assume all models like it will suffer the same fate?
I prefer to stay positive on this subject.

generally you can break it down to a few things,

Phat 20 60 n 80s are the only ones with PS2 compatibility, and due to that, these phatties run hotter and eventually w/o recapping and replacing the thermal paste, will literally cook themselves to death. this is worsened it can take 8+hours a day for a few months straight to drive a Backwards compatible ps3 to YLOD

all phatties do draw far more power then slim n super slim compared.

then down to ps2 library compatibility that doesnt have bugs on European 60's/US80's is a tad small ish, alot of games boot and run but theres alot that have minor to gamebreaking bugs. (this is due to the gpu remaining of the PS2 but the cpu being emulated.)

this is what most likely for alot, drives negative views and preferances for slims ( the matter regarding overheating and power draw) w/ a rare few still salty over the removal of OtherOS in FW 3.21

Honestly folks just read what they want and deciphered what they wanted to hear. Been running a launch model since day one. Zero issues with both of mine.

I have had 3000 & 4000 model crap out on me even more so. The 3000 always a video issue for me. The super slims are just frail and cheap. The "best" in my mind if you do not care about full BC is hands down the 2500 that can be exploited but if you have no way of knowing then the 2100 is a clear cut choice for me. Reliable, 100% can take CFW and they no longer use the NEC Tokin caps that tend to fail.

Most do not do anything but play them with zero maintenance. I have gotten so many "bad" consoles that was from smokers, roaches, never once had the thermal paste applied. Take care of your systems and they will take care of you.

IMO the launch 360's are the only unreliable systems regardless of who made it. I bought two on launch day. Both died within 2 months with MicroJunk blaming me. Quickly sold them after not having one for 2 months. Will never buy another MS product

Fats are not reliable, and the only ones that really matter are the BC ones, you'll need to mod them to prevent YLOD, same as 200x slims. The later models are more reliable model by model just because the power consumption in the RSX/CELL is very well reduced. And I choose super slims because they are the cooler in terms of temperatures, leaving the other models as hell coffins, and in super slims you also have lasers issues, but not mechanism issues ;)

Personally I don't like the slims because they look like this:

The design i like most from the latests playstations is the PS4 slim btw (not the pro because is a bit bigger)
Is a simple design, maybe too much industrial for some tastes, but is just a basic design, with a grill at the front to allow the air to enter from front... and thats all, everything else are angles and flat surfaces
The only concession they made to the style is the fact the front and the back are in a angle, but i like it because doesnt breaks the industrial design much... is still a "brick" :D

Actually, it makes me remember a bit to the design of the PS2 fat... and the PS3 reference tool DECR-1000
Both have the front divided in half... bottom half is a grill for air intake... and top half for the buttons etc...

I hate every PS4 design, even the PS5's. Or am I too old now? :D

Not for nothing I prefer PS3s over anything else. I now prefer buying something for the content, if the content isn't of my taste, then I won't buy it. I had to borrow the PS4 from my friend to play TLOU2 (which I happily bought same with RE3R), and were my biggest disappointment in a long time. MGSV was in 2015..

Man, there's so much content on PS3 that I didn't even touch :D

I think it is all about how you treat your device. If u clean it atleast once a year and replace the paste every 2-3 years u probably will never see any of the described errors.

I read some years ago while searching that MS fixed the melting 360 X-Clamps issue around 2008 so it makes sense why mine works with barely any issues.

Issues being that a disc is needed in the drive when I use the eject option or I have to turn it sideways to get the tray open. The other issue is that the part that connects to the eject tray button is broke so I have to press Y in the Dashboard to get the disc out. The only other way to get it open is to remove the front and manually press the button itself. I have actually damaged the plastic a bit from removing it several times and I am afraid if I open it again the power button may get damaged and become unusable.

This is irritating for games such as Forza Motorsport because unlike the Elder Scrolls games that allow you to boot the second disc to install the DLC, you have to on FM3/4 boot the game itself then select the content install option and press the eject button to insert disc 2.
