Can I install OFW Dex on my Retail PS3?

Hello everyone,

I just converted a CECHC04 from CEX to DEX and I'm currently on 4.91 Evilnat D-PEX.

No I'm wondering: Is there any difference to a real debug test kit and can I go ahead and install a 3.00 OFW DEX for example that Sony officially released for their Debug kits?

Or would this brick my console?

I cannot find anything anywhere else because nobody actually installs e.g. Evilnat 4.91 DEX after converting using 4.91 D-PEX.

So is it possible to just install any DEX FW after I converted it?

I unfortunately tried to install the DEX PUP. Everything was supposedly set to DEX but after installing, the PS3 doesn't start anymore. It gives a YLOD.

Is there anything I can do beyond this point to save the console?

it's a known brick cause since OFW 4.30 IIRC... and all of the DEX CFW releases do come with a patch that bypasses that check... the only way to recover your brick is a hardware flasher.

Version 4.21 is last OFW DEX which can be put on converted console AFAIR. 4.25 start bricking and killed plenty of consoles (back in days, we using OFW DEX for playing new games because Cobra CFW was behind paywall and his dongle, while max open CEX CFW was 3.55). However, I'm not sure if Zecoxao few years ago didn't publish a method for fully conversion with leaf.

Oh no..
Can you tell me which flasher I need? Thankfully I have a NAND dump.

I also still remember installing a DEX OFW in 2012 I think and had no issues there. That's because of it was lower than 4.21….
Oh man, but I'll hardware flash it with my backup.

Just a question, I read your name back in the days on the Rebug.me homepage.

Can you tell me why you guys stopped developing Rebug CFWs?

I have to say out of all the CFWs out there Rebug has always been my favorite, sad that it's been discontinued :-)

Did you convert your system with the default CEX2DEx option or using the Real Conversion (with a DEX leaf) ?

First I converted using the CEX2DEX options under Network on 4.91 D-PEX.

After that was all done, I installed 4.91 DEX (Evilnat).

My initial plan was to downgrade this unit to 1.00 DEX just for fun and nostalgia. When directly updating to 1.00 it always gave me an error, so I decided to install 4.70 OFW DEX and see if I can even install a OFW DEX FW that's not custom.

After that I wanted to go to 3.00, 2.00, 1.00 but unfortunately got the YLOD after downgrading to 4.70 OFW DEX.

Just bought one of the Toolkit systems on eBay, hopefully that works better.

Yep, that's the issue then. When you install an official DEX, there is a check in LV1 loader that bricks retail units unless you use a true DEX leaf.

Okay so let's say I want to convert my Retail PS3 to full DEX. How would I go about that? Without it bricking again?

That's not real DEX conversion, that's why your console is bricked.
What did I forget here?

You can using an Evilnat feature in CFW SETTINGS but it's risky, one of mine had bricked last time. I don't recommande itit

The only risk is that the user can install a DEX firmware version that is below the console's min version, that's why it displays a warning!
