PS3 CECHA longevity

To members old and new, I've heard this is the place to be for all things homebrew & PlayStation. I acquired a launch PS3 that had Evilnat cobra 4.92 installed by the previous owner new thermal paste APS-227 PSU and later BD410 drive, I am simply stunned at how much you can do with a jailbroken PS3 It's only taken me a year to understand only some of the features available. I am aware that most of the work has already been done to make this a fairly reliable unit I'm just wondering what else could be done to make it even more reliable?

Nothing lasts forever. However, if you replace NEC/Tokin caps, replace faulty 90 nm RSX with the reliable one (65 nm, 40nm), apply high quality thermal paste on processors, replace old thermal pads with new ones and use BD drive only for dumping games on disk, console should be quite reliable and last long

Since the previous owner already did a repaste and a clean all you can really do is use Webman and set the maximum temperature to around 65-70C

Many thanks Guys for your advice, I haven't got to the IHS yet so unsure whether delidded or not but what I do know is that I'm lucky enough to have a Sony highest binned 90nm RSX which'll help. Console runs great so far however it doesn't like GT6 in 1080p (random shut offs flashing red light)

random shut off mid game is highly caused by nec tokin. try dump syscon error log using built in evilnat settings. 1001 towards cpu, 1002 towards rsx. mine Kxx console did have same problem as yours. after replacing one of the nec tokins on the rsx side, no more issue

I pulled the err logs using BGtoolset and also dumped to USB in Evilnat settings, most of the errors are 0XA0801001 which is as you point out the cell cpu a singular RSX 1002 error. And the rest is 2022 which is DVE HDMI encoder maybe there is hope for the old girl yet I won't frankie unless absolutely necessary, not even sure I'd be confident tackling the tokins myself my soldering skills are primitive at best!

can try replace 1 nec tokin with x5 tantalums per cell / rsx side, see if the problems go away. you can practice solder on dead ps3 mb or any spare mb but you can try anyway on the board itself since the tokin pads are pretty robust and hard to be lifted off (except syscon pads )

Yeah I have done a little research in this area I've heard of the rip felix ones, tantalacers which omit the the mlcc's but keep the 470 microfarad caps but are cheaper and some ones called bootylizers (don't know too much about those) but the rip felix ones sound the best as they shield against various frequencies with mlcc's. I'm just wondering if I replace all 8 tokins with tantalizers will I need to bridge them?

No. If you have correctly assembled tantalizers, you just scrap old 8 TOKINs from the board, clean soldering traces and on the TOKIN places you solder four tantalizers and that's it. As simple as that - no bridging or whatsoever (ofc you have to remember about electric poles)

First hello everyone,
Easiest way of remove NEC TOKINs is mechanically brake them with a small spatula or a knife. If you feel confident enough you can also use a scalpel. When all is removed, soldering goes like a charm, but you need to have some soldering skills and a good soldering iron, or help with hot air.
