PS3 CECHA PS3 YLOD Saga

I just bought this CECHE01 second hand this week so I'm not sure for how long it's been like that. The previous owner probably didn't even know as he only played PES I think... It does happen on TTT2 if you just load the game and let it show the intro videos though. I also have a CECHL04 which runs flawlessly, but I'd like to have the HE01 work as should, as it's PS2 compatible.

I can see that TMCMB0E477MTRF is 2.5v, shouldn't we use 6.3v actually? and why not just replacing the old Tokins with the same type new Tokins?

Also, are all Tokin in the PS3 of the same type, and therefore the same replacement caps can be used for any of them?

No if u look at the tokins data sheets they are 2.5V also so we are using the same head room as those, Not to say the 6.3V ones wont work tho. You can how ever replace with the same tokins if u wish but u could face the same issues down the track since they are known to fail even in laptops etc....

No not all tokins are the same for all models if u look at the tokins casing that will tell u what they are. the later fats and early slims got a slightly smaller uF rated tokin caps and even the later PS3s after that started getting tantalums themselves.

Thanks. Why not just replacing with standard 1000/1200uf electrolytes? You can run wires out of the PCB cover and mount them there. Or, would that not be a suitable replacement for the Tokins?

Would you mind TLDR for me about two things?

1. Can you just use regular (big, none SMD) electrolytes to replace the Tokins?
2. Is the TMCMB0E477MTRF the only capacitor type I need to use in order to replace these tokins? The machine is an early FAT CECHE01...

Sorry mate this is @SeanRanklin thread about his problems so to keep his from being cluttered with other questions that are answered in the other thread im going to leave it here, not trying to be rude but there is a 116 page thread there for a reason and u must read and not be lazy to save asking the same questions over and over. More people will help u there too.
 
By your "answer" I'd take this it as no for both questions then. Otherwise I can't see a reason why you would send someone to a 116 pages thread. Or let's let someone else jump in and explain.

I think he is trying to redirect all the talks related with the tokins to the same thread, so it will be easyer for other people in the future to find all the worthy info about it located in the same place instead of being spreaded in tenths of threads
And yeah, the tokins thread is long but take a read at the first and last pages, there was some talks related with electrolitycs capacitors in the last pages

Anyway, dont take it as rude answers, just write in the tokins thread and im sure you will have some answers in few time, there is some people active keeping an eye at that thread :)
 
Small update:

Random YLOD's frequency now increased. Tried to play GTAV but it turned off twice about 10 minutes into the gameplay.

Last thing I am going to test on the unit when my delivery of NECs arrive is the below video. Only on the top of the board though. If it works yay, if not, in the trash can she goes.

 
After a while considering fixing this, I just replaced it with the later CECHL04. It can run PS2 games too. Why insist on fixing a CECHE01? Am I missing anything?

Hey there, did you manage to try the new capacitors? Been reading this thread for the past couple of days, the story is fascinating because I'm waiting for my mint CECHA00 to arrive from Japan, wondering if I'll face the same issues.

Really depends on how the previous owner treated it. I bought my A00 from a Bookoff in Japan about 3-4yrs ago. It's been nothing but golden for me. My temps are low...both the CELL and the RSX never go above 55C. I do have a hardware mod for the fan installed and it runs at a constant 50%. I play with bluetooth headphones so the jet engine sound is most drowned out. Even when I don't play with headphones I'm just used to the sound.
I've purchased quite a bit of used electronic stuff from Japan and when they say mint they mean mint. I have yet to feel screwed over in any of my transactions since 2015.
However, my experience with Japanese sellers doesn't represent all of them either. When buying a 14yr old used console it's always buyer beware.

Hi! Thank you for the reply! Just to clarify: you don't experience any problems playing TTT2, GT6 or TLoU, correct?
As for the PS3 I'm getting - it's in a mint condition with a box, cables and a gamepad, all in great condition as well, at least of the pictures! It cost a fortune to ship it here so I'm hoping it won't give me any problems.

Out of those 3 games I only have the TLoU and I played that game for hours on end a few years back. Every so often I'll start the game and run some tests to see how hot my chips get and still don't have a problem. I just got lucky in the luck of the draw in regards to the system I bought. After getting to the hotel and opening up the cellophane wrap I could instantly tell it had been taken care of by the previous owner. There was only one little scratch on the lid and nothing smelled of cigarettes.
The stuff that I've purchased from Japan still in the box have always been in good shape and I've always been happy. Granted, I mostly buy when I'm there so I can always look the goods over before committing.
Once you open the box and look at what you've got you'll have a good idea...

Hey, yes did end up getting them and installing them onto the board. Believe it or not, the unit was tested for about 2 hours over 2 days and it did not turn off at all, until all of a sudden the unit developed a FULL YLOD. Now whether that was due to the tokins, or heating the board too many times and potentially damaging the main chips, i'll never know, but for a brief time, i can say that yes, replacing the Tokins on the other side of the board may have helped that issue. The unit is gone now. I ended up finding another CECHA with a faulty BD drive and nothing else (touch wood) which i swapped the drive and its working fine among doing the usual clean out and thermal paste replacement. Hold up, did i read that right? You bought one of those mint CECHA's on ebay? So jealous! i was eyeing them for such a long time but i never went through with the purchase as it is from a different region and wouldnt play my bc games without jailbreaking - not something i would want to do to a mint unit!

I'd honestly be too afraid to use those units. Had debated buying one multiple times but never went through with it. Reason being these units require so much maintenance and even then, silly things (like tokins) have the ability to randomly stop working and will need delicate and risky work to try and repair.

I'd just be keeping that unit looking as sexy as possible and stored away!

hi guys, i'm new in this forum! i finnaly decided to participate and take the ride for some CECHA's restoring!
i've bought several CECHA01 (3 until now) and i've found that 2 of them only can be used for "light" effort onto RSX: MGS4, The Orange Box, RE5, ...
Also, the PS2 games are working fine (under WebMAN's fixed fan @ 40%).

However GOW3, Uncharted 2 and GT5 are causing shutdowns and the red-blinking led.
Based on all the messages posted here, could I think that those 2 CECHA01 are good candidates for capacitors replacement?
Here, on my country (Colombia), to obtain some tantalum caps is a hard-to-achieve task, so I would like to buy a small quantity (10-15) in order to start replacing the RSX-related first...

Also, I've heard that it's possible to "add" some capacitance to the current NEC/TOKIN caps, soldering a tantalum next to each installed TOKIN. There's someone that tried that yet?

Welcome to the club friend. Definitely without fail your issue is due to bad Tokins.. I wish when I started going through this back then that someone could tell me exactly what was wrong, but we as a community just weren't sure about what was causing this issue back then, so you are lucky in a way.

Good news is that replacing the Tokins will most likely resolve your problem. Bad news is that applying heat gun to the main chips no matter what the reason, is never good for the console. You never know whether the specific time you use the gun on it, if that will be causing some detrimental damage to the chips. Mine eventually died from this exact reason but I had two YLOD causes towards the end so I was fighting a losing battle.

You have to decide whether you want to attempt the fix on your console or leave as is.

Sorry for the bump, but I've had a random case of sudden shutdowns even after replacing at least some capacitors off my CECHL. Leaving it idle seems fine, but if I play something like NFS Rivals for a good while or an emulated PS2 game, the console beeps three times and shuts itself down. Does the console need more capacitors or am I SOL?
