In regards to USBs not working correctly on PS3s, not being detected, showing no files, or otherwise being a pain in the butt to use:
Literally joined because after scouring forums helping a buddy customize his PS3 no one seems to have solved this from what I've seen, at least not this glaring particular issue.
First of all lets assume all the stuff has been done from 100s of posts before
-Wipe/Clean
-Convert to MBR
-Set new partition to FAT32
-Configured a listed directory
-few other misc things im probably forgetting, (but probably not that relevant)
These steps will get many the Triangle button to open a menu, but this is unacceptable as it is a degraded function of the drive and will have issues running updates, running files such as RAPs / Riffs off of it for authentication, integration with tools, i.e. dumping etc.
The missing step here is permissions, whichever computer you format on you must make sure to grant as much as possible
to do so:
Go to Computer aka MyComputer with USB plugged in
right click USB icon > properties menu
Sharing Tab (top) > Advanced sharing button
Click Permissions button
Select "Everyone" if needed > check boxes allowing "read, write, execution"
(you can also add "Everyone" if its somehow missing)
click done/save/close until you're out of properties
(also Linux users could look at tossing a chmod 777 at it, just speculation.)
This had immediate results and my package manager could function normally, picking out files from USB instead of doing the nuke usb root method of installing all on usb root. MUCH BETTER
just thought id pop in and share, since was a frustrating process setting up my friends PS3 without a functional PS3 and I didn't see one PS3 forum post about this. Donned on me while reading up on some Linux related stuff.
Apologies if someone diid bring this up, in which case the real culprit google.
Anyway, hope this puts the issue to bed for alot of folks and may it show up in many google searches.
