The question is how did You connect it? If by eSATA, then normally 5400 rpm drives should be read with ~100MB/s, but this also depends of course on HDD type and wearing. Shouldn't drop below 50MB/s in worst cases. But if USB 2.0, sooner world will end than You make such dump, so this wouldn't be strange. And there is another factor, 5400 HDDs have average write speed not faster 60MB/s. And if both: external USB and internal SATA controller going through this USB controller, speed is even lower. Maybe that's is Your case.
2TB is totally to much. And thanks for the will anyway! The same goes to @baldjared. I know it is not a trivial task, especially that this demanding from user some of his time and rather not usage environment for gaming. But at least is worth a try to ask if anyone could do this. If I would have a normal job, I could just go to a shop and buy Slim and problem solved. But oh well... ^^
