Hi, I'm new to custom firmware and need help.

mmCM isn't another name for multiMAN. Back when Cobra was done via a dongle deank did a special version of his manager as they had ISO support but we did not at the time unless we bought the dongle.
I know. But I didn't want to overwhelm OP with too much information before he sorted out some of his problems (b/c it would require explaining what cobra USB is, what cobra is, some history, etc). Good explanation, though.

I'd like to give you guys an update. So, as I understand it, The Last of Us game has a file over 4 GB hence the reason why the actual game logo itself shows as "Split" and when I launch it, basically, what the system is trying to do is, it's trying to merge the "Splitted" files and make it whole again while saving it to the internal hard drive <--- Please correct me if I am wrong.

The problem is, I've looked up multiple tutorials on youtube and stumbled across a setting inside multiman that says wrote access to /dev_flash and the youtuber said to enable it. When I did it, The last of us isn't even going through the hdd cache installation, it goes to xmb and triies to load the game. I can see the last of us icon on the lower right corner of the screen but it's stuck. I'm starting to think that this dump file has been corrupted over the years of non usage. Is there any internal settings on the ps3/multiman/webman that I can tick to see if I can force the installation of the cache to the hdd?

and about the matter of the system not installing the cache to the hdd, am I supposed to enable something on the settings? Or is it supposed to be done automatically?

Another question, I don't know if it's something that I've done but both the red "Split" indicator on The Last of Us and Uncharted are now gone. Is this ok?

I would recommend converting your drive to NTFS to hold full isos, and use a program on your PC called PS3 ISO tools to rejoin the split files.

Once you do this, you should download a Homebrew app called prepISO which is used to read NTFS drives for webMAN. In the webman settings, check "disable content scan on startup" and in the "scan for content" section, uncheck "dev_ntfs".

Also yes to your first question, that's how it works. But, games cannot corrupt from not using them after a period of time. My games were on one of my drives for 3 years before I stopped using it and got back into the scene and they still work fine.

You should be on the latest version of webman MOD, and not webman. Two different versions. And when you launch the installer, hold L1 to get the full version.

Would you suggest that I format this ps3 and jailbreak it on my own so I have complete grasp of everything? Would it be better if I do it that way? The downside of doing so is that I will no longer have access to the games inside the actual console. Like, delete all of the contents of this console and just start fresh? Possibly updating to latest ofw and then installing the latest cfw of my preference. Is there an actual benefit of doing so? Or would it be better if I just manually update the actual cfw of this console.

Since you already have custom firmware, all you have to do is download a custom firmware of a higher version. The current one right now is 4.88 Evilnat. It's a file titled "PS3UPDAT.PUP. This file will go on your FAT32 drive in PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP.

Hi there! Thank you! This cleared up a lot of things for me. Sorry to sound repetitive, but being the complete noob that I am, I want to be absolutely sure that I understood you correctly. So basically, I do not need to format the entire console? I can just download a certain "Firmware" called "4.88 Evilnat" and just paste it on PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP.????? Did I get you correctly here? If I do this wrong, is there a chance of breaking the console, like bricking it?

Also, Since you recommended to use NTFS, I'll need to download PS3 ISO tools and prepISO?

I anticipate your reponse! :)

No problem and yes, you don't need to reformat. And if you ever wanted to go back to original firmware, you can just update your console with regular firmware and it won't brick at all.

The link to the firmware will be right here.
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/4-88-2-evilnat-cobra-8-3-custom-firmware-cfw-cex-released.32057/
Should be the second link.
And PS3UPDATE.PUP is the name of the update file, the directory I mentioned is how it goes.

Yes, PrepISO is installed on your PS3 and PS3 ISO tools is done from your PC.

Thanks for the quick response! So far, everyone in this forum has been awesome! I've gotten more information from people here rather than other sources such as youtube and google.

A couple of questions I have before doing your recommendation:

1. Is there a reason to even use fat32 as an external storage nowadays as opposed to ntfs?
2. Should I update the ofw before downloading the 4.88 evilnat cobra you linked?
3. Would this cfw work EVEN if I don't update the original firmware of this ps3?

1. It's an advantage to use FAT32 because that's what the PS3 natively supports. But disadvantages is that FAT32 has limits.
2. No, because it will kill your custom firmware and you would have to do the process of flashing your nand over again.
3.Yes, because installing original firmware over custom firmware kills it. Since you have custom firmware, they have ways you can update to the latest firmware without having to update it regularly. That's what they make them for.

Wow, that's freakin amazing! Alright, I'll do the steps you've mentioned and will give you and the other awesome people here an update to what happens next! Appreciate it!

Also, as a clarification, what I need to do now is basically:

1. Create backups of the games from this external hard drive to my pc.
2. Format this external hard drive as NTFS
3. Download PS3 ISO tool and merge the split files from the backup i created then transfer them back to the now supposedly NTFS format external hard drive.
4. download prepISO and then install this particular program on this outdated ps3
5 Plug the now supposed NTFS external hard drive on the ps3 and then just copy the ISO format of the backup games into the PS3 ISO folder inside multiman
6. After doing all this, I would then need to update this PS3's cfw into the 4.88 evilnat that you've linked

Am I missing something? Or should I do this asap?

Thanks in advance my guy, you're awesome!

I would recommend updating to Evilnat 4.88 first and then doing everything else. A warning, though: Typically, Rebug firmware has 2 "modes": CEX and DEX. CEX is normal user firmware (like Evilnat 4.88), and DEX is debugging firmware. If you're currently on DEX mode, you can't update to a higher CEX firmware without first changing back to CEX mode (and I think it can cause bricks). So, before doing anything, go into Rebug Toolbox, go to the System Tab, and click on System Information. What does it output?

Beat me to it, but yeah, you should update it first and make sure your console is CEX and not DEX before updating.

You can easily tell if you're on either if there's an IP address at the bottom right hand corner, that means you're on a DEX firmware. If not, then it's a CEX.

Hi thank you for this warning, what particular system tab do i need to go to see this? The system tab inside multiman?

Go to Rebug Toolbox. You mentioned having it installed in your original post. The layout is very similar to multiman.

Edit: @MrKnifeGod, is the IP address displayed on XMB to Rebug Toolbox? I didn't know that was a way to tell if you were on DEX. Though, from OPs initial post, it seems that he isn't connected to the internet so an IP is not available (not sure what it would display in this case).

This is the information I found

Rebug toolbox-multi
Version 02.03.04

PS3 System: Firmware 4.78
Ip Address: [Not Available]
LV2 Kernel: CEX
Target Type: CEX
Free HDD Space: 114.77 GB
COBRA: 7.3

Hi, thanks for replying. With the information stated above, am I right to assume that this ps3 is under CEX?

Alright, it seems you're in CEX mode. It should be safe for you to update.

Awesome! Is there a particular walkthrough I can follow? This is gonna be my first time doing this. After I update the cfw of this console, I can then proceed to formatting the external drive to ntfs and then do the ps3 iso thing as well as the prep iso right?

Another question, when I opened the rebug toolbox, the system said the following:

"Your system is not running on compatible REBUG configuration

Some options will not be available"

Then when I press circle on it the next message says:

"Your system is not running on compatible rebug cobra configuration!"

Toggling COBRA will not be available.

Should I be worried about this? Or nah?

It's only saying that because you're not on a DEX firmware.
But afterwards yes, you can proceed on fixing your game issues.

I see. On to your steps then! Really appreciate it, you guys rock!

Will give you guys an update after doing all this.

Since you guys mentioned it, would you be so kind to explain what this CEX and DEX is? Is it important? What does it do?

Oh, it seems that you aren't even running Rebug firmware. Not sure what CFW you're on, but it should still be safe to update. Rebug Toolbox is meant to be used on Rebug firmware, but it can still be installed on other CFWs. The newest version of the Toolbox supports 4.88 CFW and suppresses that message, but the options are still limited. You may wish to uninstall it after you update, unless you find a use for it in the future (if you do, install the latest version).

Affirmative! it would be safe to uninstall or delete this program off of the ps3 then? Or would you recommend to just keep it there for possible future purposes?

I'd recommend uninstalling, and in the future if you need it just install the latest version. Evilnat's firmware and wMM already provide a lot of its features straight from XMB.
