PS3 [Homebrew Revival PS3.1] Featuring "UFO Racer" by ThatOtherDev

Homebrew Revial is a new feature at psx-place.com where we explore some great projects of the past to educate new user's on some homebrew they may not of known about and also to perhaps sparks some new development in various projects we spotlight in this series, checkout another exclusive psx-place series with The Power Supply that has interviewed various developer's who have powered the community (will continue with a new season of interviews soon :) ).

First up, we have a great homebrew game that was developed for the Wii and the PS3 by developer ThatOtherDev (aka ThatOtherPerson) called UFO Racer, it's a game with a great foundation and has alot of potential to be a really great homebrew title, but the original developer has not made an update since 2012, However the source code is available, using an early version of PSL1GHT.. Can this be a project that see's a rival in 2022, 10 years after it was released? Checkout some of the source code and the tutorials this developer wrote for the PS3. Also, take note during the source code release of UFO Racer and many other games created by ThatOtherDev. The developer states the following about using the source code: " Make something. There is an appalling, lack of original games being made in the homebrew community and I implore you to take part in changing this." see full statement in tab below.

    • Developer ThatOtherDev (aka ThatOtherPerson)
    • Release Type: Homebrew Game
    • SDK PSL1GHT (Source Code here)
    • Released on: May 27, 2012 (v3.0)
      • Last PS3 Update: September 16, 2012 (v3.4)
    • Special Features
      • Six-Axis Controls
      • Track Editor/Creator
      • Hi-Score / Lap Counter

(Note: this is v3.2. running in the video)

    Game Description:

UFO Racer, is a racing game involving extra terrestrials in hovering/flying vehicles, flying through a 3D track while controlling the craft with your SixAxis control's. Create your own tracks. Various stats are displayed on-screen showing how much of the track you have completed along with a lap counter and a best lap time tracker.

    • This will be the third time I have made this game (remade not just ported), and I have become exceedingly efficient at it. It is however the first time it is on PS3 and it's back to being in 3D (though for the time being it isn't rendering 100% correctly like it is in the above screenshot) so huzzah for that.

UFO Racer, as the self-explanatory title suggests, is a racing game involving extra terrestrials in hovering/flying vehicles. Some stats are displayed on screen showing how much of the looping track you have finished, how many times you have completed a lap and what the shortest amount of time you have done so in has been.

Use the analog stick(s) to control the ship.
I'll be updating, fixing up and improving it as soon as I get the time but I'm really trying to get some other things done before the end of the month so I'll be busy for the next few days.

    • v 3.1 (PS3)
      • Now,the high score is saved every time you finish a lap, there is now on screen text telling you what your time was from the previous lap, there have been slight changes to the track geometry and texture, the track is now loaded from an external file (it was previously hard coded into the game) and the font used for on screen text has also changed.

    • v. 3.2 (PS3)
      • This small update corrects the obvious rendering problems that had previously plagued the PS3 version of UFO Racer. Polygons are no longer culled for having a single vertex behind the camera. Textures are now perspective correct and use mippmapping.

    • 7837085404_2fbbd60559_z.jpg
This update adds a track editor, a title/menu screen, accurate collision detection with the environment and the option to reset the best time (since you may be racing on custom tracks that are longer than the one you set the record with).

In the editor you use the directional pad to move around and press the 1 and 2 buttons (on Wii) or X and O buttons (on PS3) to change the type and rotation of the selected tile. Pressing Plus or Minus (on Wii) or Start (on PS3) will save the track and return you to the main menu.

When I get the time I'll be fixing up the UI and probably editing the track tile meshes so that you don't get completely stopped when you drive into their ridges

      .

    • Video Showing Six Axis Support

      v3.4 (PS3)
      • In this small update I've fixed a problem with track saving, replaced the PS3 analog stick controls with Sixaxis motion controls and the Wii version of course now features the most recent home dashboard menu. Now on PS3 you use the X button to accelerate, the circle button to go in reverse and you just tilt the controller to turn.

What I would like you to do:
    • Make something. There is an appalling lack of original games being made in the homebrew community and I implore you to take part in changing this.
    • Give credit when credit is due. Don't just reskin one of the games or change a couple things and pretend that you have made something new.

Tutorial & Source Code Links from ThatOtherDev:

Note the developer website is still.up but the domain changed.
Note some links within the website point to the old URL you will have to manually add "wordpress" before the dot com..

  • Comment below to see your request feature added, Who knows maybe there is a developer who can deliver this feature for you. Or maybe you have the ability yourself :) ..We will start with some suggestions that would make this game next level, please provide your own and also suggest the next title we should cover as well.
    • MultiPlayer Support Locally or Online
    • AI racer's or Ghost racer's from previous saved laps.
    • Change Track Color in track editor

I hope with all the recent developments like Crystal's revived development with RSXGL and dynarec we get more open sourced PC and homebrew games ported as well as 3D console emulators.

UFO Racer is a very cool homebrew game. I love the fact that is supports motion control. Definitely has potential as it's already a solid indie game and still very impressive even a decade on.

Here is most of ThatOtherDev's games for the PS3.
There is a few not in this playlist, but most are there along with the source code link

Just throwing a fun idea, i think you could form a single game with many levels if you incorporate a story line to tie various together. Here just a very quick idea LOL..
:
You start the game in a UFO Racer concept

Then you jet out to space in a level like this

Then your landing on a planet and your playing these environment as a level ?

Then you enter a building on this new planet and you see all these coming at you:

Then, find the control room and your in control to save something remotely. lol just throwing some idea's for some quick and limited creativity on my part :) ..

Obviously alot of work in between to fill gaps but just a quick example we could make a great project of so many great pieces ThatOtherDev gifted to the community. There is endless concepts here and would take alot of the work out of a full project from scratch.

That Other Space Shooter is one I've never seen up to now. Will give it a go if I can find a download link lol

I think a good contender for potential future development is The Unmapped Forest (link).

"an original 2D action RPG that is still very early in development." - sounds like plenty potential for some interesting directions which could be taken with it :)

Delete, i found them

That points to the original download section we had on the previous sites software. (now just redirects to the main forum) We lost some brew at the time.

Alot of those are on brewology right now as well.

Jetpack and a few other early homebrew, need special attention,Its not just a simple resign, They used some early signing practices, more what worked, instead of a proper signing.

Edit:
