How do I play physical import games?

I have two Japanese import games that I want to play on my Vita, I mounted them in the Vita they didn't even show up on my Live Area, I'm using a 1000 model and I read somewhere that the original Vita is supposed to be region-free so I can play imported games but they're not showing up.

Is there a plugin or an VPK that can recognise imported games and make them playable on the Live Area? Please let me know, thanks.
