PS2 [MX4SIO/SIO2SD] SD Card Adapter and SD-driver for the PS2 SIO2 interface

Apologies, as I don't see how to edit my previous post, so I'll write this one:

It seems like on OPL BDM3, the USB options act like the BDM option in 1.2.0, the text is not updated. Changing it to Auto it did let my console to find the games on the SD card, and I was able to both see and load save files. In other words, there's really not an issue with it beyond being unclear.

Dragon Quest V with the fan translation seems to be working too.

I also add another question, though: I understand that fragmentation can be an issue with the PS2, is there any tips to avoid that happening? I'm not going to be constantly adding and removing things from the SD card, it's going to be literally only to back up games and not need to use the disc reader.

I'll go through a quick run down of the process i do when adding games...

1) Format MicroSD / SD card using GuiFormat FAT32 and 16K clusters.
2) Use OPL Manager to add the folders (structure) to the MicroSD / SD card.
3) Then i copy all the OPL folders (structure) from my MicroSD / SD across to a dummy folder on my PC.
4) Using this dummy folder on my PC (replica of the MicroSD / SD OPL folder layout) i work all the games into their correct folders:- (A) 4GB+ ISOs split (using USBUTIL) to the root. (B) All .bin files converted to ISOs using Tools in OPL Manager, and placed into the DVD folder. (C) less than 4GB ISOs added to the DVD folder.
5) Once done, i copy all of the contents of this dummy folder across to the MicroSD / SD card.
6) I then open OPL Manager and get all the correct Game Titles of the games i added, and shorten any Game Titles over 32 characters.
7) Put MicroSD / SD back into the MX4SIO (inserted in the PS2) and load the list of games using OPL BDM3.

The reason for doing this, is because i want to add all the games in one go to the MicroSD / SD (to avoid fragmentation).

tested on some consoles

90001 ok
79003 ok
75001 ok
70001 not read
39001 ok

I left running the game "ape scape 2" for 14 hours and there was no loss of connection with SD, very good!

compatibility with games I could not see differences, only 3 games work here

continue with this fantastic work

have a good week
I'm on you're lawn Nebercracker

I want to make one thing very clear. A few reasons why I pushed this project!
  • The adapter itself is very simple to create and this gets people into creating their own, either for themself or others. This drives quality up and price down as well as introducing people into doing something on their own and learning things!
  • It might introduce people into the Homebrew-scene and/or get more developers into the PS2-Scene.
  • Portability and being Plug&Play and small! This is like an FMCB MemoryCard! You go to a friend and have a MemoryCard with an Exploit and an adapter for MC and take your entire game-collection and saves with you, as well as being able to install FMCB for someone else and show them how to build an adapter, etc.
  • Etc.
I am sure that this will get BIGGER than on almost any other console!
This will spread A LOT! This will probably be spreading almost as much as FMCB and even along with it!

The Plug&Play-ability is going to be a huuuuge factor!

Translations as well as extentions of the MX4SIO-booklet are very welcomed!

I hope that we will see more professional "packages" from companies like "BitFunx", "KAICO", etc.!

Some ideas:
  • The adapter, including LEDs, Pop-out inverse (big) SD-Slot, good case, etc.
  • A "box"/case for the adapter, one or two MCs, multiple SD-Cards, etc. It could have a branding-logo as well and it should have a form factor to easily carry it around!
  • The booklet&manual regarding hardware and them being extended...!
  • Maybe a nice packaging (carton) in the size of a DVD-Case, which includes all of them (trouser pocket sized box which can include everything, Adapter, etc.).
  • etc.

Sorry for the double post...

I initially had some games working perfectly in my MC2SIO setup, and some completely failing, and some being really inconsistent. I had used a very cheap old 32GB microSD I got "overseas". I figured it was the problem and am very happy to report that is the case. I purchased a Silicon Power 128GB Micro SD Card U3 SDXC for $9.99 off of Amazon (comes with the full size SD adapter), and it's working perfectly so far. At least 9/10 games tested and working (I think Marvel Ultimate Alliance just has general issues in newer OPL builds). Just wanted to share the info and thank the folks involved with this project and posting helpful info in this thread.

Card swapping if you really need the extra MB.
Slimming down the FMCB from unnecessary files if you don't like the swapping idea.
Finally the multitap would be a nice in-between solution if you hate the swapping and really need the extra space. But it breaks the slimness factor with its sheer size.

From my understanding the Multitap was only used for 4-player games. How can it increase storage?

Hi @ChillyDown ...please could you submit your SD card compatibility results to the google sheet here:-
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdOnYDGXe-2EfgISdIqILCuUER9p9Orm9dbXsZwP9m_Tguaeg/viewform

Then others can see the results here:-

Theoretically It has more slots for memory cards:

So there is no need to swipe memory cards...
Although I don't know how support looks like in this matter.
This is awesome, I didn't even know the multitap had those slots. Definitely gonna look for one to buy and check it out, thank you!

Hi all,

Been tinkering around with Helder's MC2SIO and having no luck loading into anything, unfortunately.

Running latest version of FMCB (1.966), and the specified version of OPL that his site has up for the MC2SIO. I have a 77000 Silver model, so I'm using the OPLPS2LD2.ELF file rather than the standard one for below the 7000 series. My SD card is a TEAMGROUP GAMING 256GB SDXC, formatted to FAT32 with GUIFormat, 16KB clusters (took forever). I chose this card as multiple people have confirmed that TEAMGROUP SD cards are working, both here and on Reddit, and it was on sale and has a hefty amount of storage space. My PS2 is hooked up via OEM Component Cables to an Open Source Scan Converter, and led via HDMI into my LG CX65 OLED.

Followed both Nacho and MrMario's videos to a T, and have basically gotten all the way to the end - OPL loads up properly, and shows all my games (at this point in time, just R-TYPE FINAL and Ridge Racer V for testing, as they are listed as Working in the compatibility Google Spreadsheet). I just can't boot into anything. I launch the game from OPL, and am met with a black screen nearly every time. I've tried on almost a dozen ISOs now, and the only thing that has ever booted in at all is F1 2002 (EA), which got to the main menu but failed to load up gameplay or FMVs. Every other game has not booted. I've tried all major game strata - USBUTIL-split >4GB games, <4GB ISOs and <700MB CD games, all the same. Black screen on launch, MC2SIO light unresponsive.

I've tried compatibility modes as well, to no avail. For example, Ridge Racer V apparently works better with only Mode 6 enabled, but changingthat didn't do anything for me either.

I'm starting to wonder if it's the SD card, or a compatibility problem, or I've simply arrived too early to this project. I've even deleted and repasted a fresh /OPL folder on my FMCB card to see if it was something wrong with OPL itself, but that's not looking likely. I may just load games onto my USB drive itself and see if anything boots, even though I abandoned doing that years ago when I saw how bad the FMV stutter was.

I'd appreciate confirmation/help from anyone that's come across this issue, as this project is looking like a dead end for me for now if I simply can't load into anything.

Cheers.

I think it's ungrateful for me to say this given I have contributed nothing to the development of this project, but I share the sentiment of "arriving too early."

I also found the Nacho and Mr Mario tutorials and I combined those with what I've learned from spending time on this forum. Even when everything was functioning it was still severely lacking. Now suddenly everything has stopped working. No games load properly, sometimes the Slim doesn't even recognize I have a FMCB memory card in it.

Originally I wanted to mod a Slim model so I could have a more portable alternative to lugging around my modded Fat, but as of right now having a working console is worth the small inconvenience.

There's soo many variables as to why you and me are having this issue. Console model, OPL version, SD card, etc. If you turned PADEMU on, I would guess it's a SD card issue. I don't have a link to the compatability sheet, but I know it's around here somewhere.
