PS3 My first delid

Hi guys.

I'll write here in this topic since it is related, no need to open a new topic.

I'm trying to make my first delid in the CPU. RSX I already did and it was easy. At CPU I can't. I tried with a cutter (thin), a knife and even a spoon. I gave heat with an hair drier in order to "melt" the glue but I can't cut it. It is like stone! I even did some push but nothing at all! The blade does not move, it is like stone.

Any idea?

Thanks for the support!
Best regards!

all i can think of is a stanley blade with a hammer, sounds risky but i watched one of a video when a guy did it.

Are you talking about something like this?

that's what I used (but a weaker model, not from Stanley) and of course no hammer.

Delid is the last resort. If you don't have any problem with heat, avoid it. I did it on mine with a little bit of kerosene, applied with a syringe on the borders of cell, it helps the blade to slide.

But, as I said, delid is the easiest way I know to kill your PS3. So be careful and patient.

Some people have this problem where Silicon glue has extremely hardened like a CEMENT and very difficult to cut. Some people find it soft & easier to cut like a butter after heating with heat gun.

Hair drier won't do the trick. You need a heat gun and read this thread.

The problem is that CPU reaches 60 ºC easily just in menu. But with webman mod it stays more and less constant even in games (tried with Metal Gear Solid 4).

Ya, cement is the perfect word to describe. Guess I need a cheap heat gun. Where to find?

60c is no problem. What is your fan speed?

Edit - Who told you that CPU reaching 60c is bad?

Why do you want to maintain Temp below 60c?

CELL can easily take Temps up to 75c. RSX can take Temps upto 70c. Super slim RSX can take up to 80c.

First make sure that you need a Delid or not.

Now i am thinking that you don't even need a Delid. Just put your webman auto control at 70c and see how high fan speed goes in games like GTA 5 & Uncharted 3. If you can keep CELL & RSX below 70c at Fan speed below 50%. You do not need any Delid.

So you recommend to put the trigger at 70ºC ? Will do it!

I put as 60ºC because it seemed a "fresh" temperature.

70c auto control is correct. Keep CELL below 75c and RSX below 70c. You should be able to keep your Temps below 70c at 50% fan speed. Set your minimum fan speed at 37%.

DO NOT put auto control at 60c. This will strain your fan and worn it out sooner.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I'll play some games and see how it works. Lets pray that the delid is not needed xD

I don't recommend delidding unless temps are out of control, you can permanently kill your console if done wrong

My main difficulty is to understand what is temps out of control? How much high? How much the fans are loud? At this moment I have MGS4 installing and CPU is at 69ºC and RSX at 62ºC and FAN 39%.

It appears to be under control.

while we are on the topic of temps, is it normal for the ps3 temp to go up if i was using filezilla transferring games over to the ps3?

The way i do the delids is with a palette knife. I bought mine from Hobby Lobby. They are cheap. First what i do is start from a corner where there is nothing bothering the palette knife (caps, etc) and then i put some rosin flux in the corner. (rosin flux isn't conductive) the reason why i put a bit of rosin flux is to soften the glue. I take my time on the corner. There is no need to rush. As long as i can make an inscision on that corner the palette knife will start cutting the rest. I just need that one corner cut. Then i slowly work my way around it. Slowly keeping your palette knife alighined with the glue. If you go further in you risk cracking the die. Your first takle is to patiently cut that corner. Then keep it aligned with the glue.(also the rosin flux acts like a lubricant to slide the knife that way you don't scratch any delicate traces) This is for the CPU. After that i just get iso alchol and wipe the CPU clean.

The GPU i slide a piece of card (has to be hard) then with a knife lift the heat spreader.

This is for large PS3s. I haven't worked on Slims so i don't know. (i do have a slim i'm gonna work on)
