PS2 New games added - theme has no backgrounds, only game covers

Hello everyone,

So I've had my PS2 HDD configured for quite some time now, FreeHDBoot, OPL and the JVSG Flix Theme v1, the only one I really like. Decided to upgrade the HDD with some extra games, but after proceeding as usual to install and add art to them they only show the game covers on the games list, and not the corresponding backgrounds for each new game added.

I've tried deleting and reinstalling the theme, toggle between show art on/off, reinstalling those specific games again etc., but the backgrounds only keep being shown on all other games that were always there, and not the new ones. OPL Manager (latest version) seems to be making its job getting the game covers and everything else, as the backgrounds are the theme's job to apply, I assume...

Is this some kind of a known issue, or am I missing something? In case it gets to that, do I have a way to find the corresponding backgrounds for each new game and manually apply them myself?

Thanks for your time and replies!

You can try the following:

1. Check that the images are not corrupted, meaning they don't weigh "0kb" but rather a reasonable size.

2. Make sure they are in "png" format and that they meet the standard "640x480" size.

3. Try a smaller game list.

4. Try the default OPL theme and check that the background is displayed in the details section.

5. Try other methods such as USB or SMB.

6. Use OPL 1.0.0 or 1.1.0

Thank you for your reply, I solved the issue, which was of my own making.

It's been years since I've set up the HDD, which was once and now I remember why. I only have OPL Manager at hand on my PC when I update the HDD, which means never. So the OPLM's default batch download for the Art doesn't check the box for Logos and Backgrounds, I have to check them manually. That was my mistake, didn't notice it until last night. It all worked out perfectly after that, no matter the OPLM or OPL Loader version.
If it's useful to anyone in any way, there were some games that don't have online backgrounds yet I suppose (e.g. This Is Football 2002, Volleyball Challenge...) so I just downloaded some .jpg images and resized them to 640x480 as OPLM indicates. All of them show up fine, so the older versions of these programs still work perfectly.

JVSG Flix v1 CRT variant is the only theme and version that I truly like, so I would always try everything I can in order to keep it.
Sorry for my mistake, it's been years since I've dived in into any of this. It was a stark reminder of why this is truly a "just set it and forget it" type of thing. I'm very thankful for these tools of course, but for only being able to install via HDBatch Installer, and having to use OPL Loader to delete games, along with many other unexplainable quirks for a basic user... I mean, there has to be a better way to do things. One thing's for sure, the best way to update the Art for me it's definitely to download, generate and manage the Art and export it to the USB flash drive to paste it using the PS2. Updating the HDD just gave me more problems than solutions.

Again, thank you so much for your reply and attention, very grateful and happy to have the HDD nice and tidy again!

You can also use OPL Scanner or OPL Mobile Scanner, which have frequent database updates.

Glad you solved it. It's a pleasure. Have fun playing.
