PS2 Powering PS2 Slim with Boost / Buck Converter

As the topic says I'm interested to know if it is safe to use those cheap boost/buck converters that you see on ebay/amazon/aliexpress to power the PS2.

The Ps2 slim power supplies output are rated at 8.5v and 5.65a.

I want to use it on the SCPH-70002 GH-032 / GH-035 motherboards in a PS2 in a PC case mod here.

I would power the boost / buck converter with the PC power supplies 12v rail.

The PS2 will be used without the disc drive and the hard drive will be powered by the PC power supply. Therefor the PS2 motherboard will only be drawing probably 2.5 to 3 amps max.

Are those cheap converters likely to cause any damage to the PS2?

I tried to do it today with 19V 3A psu and 5A buck conveter. It didnt work, PS2 power indicator lights up red but when powering it on it just shuts off. Probably unstable voltage or current limit... I have 75004 PS2

Yeah did the same for me months ago after I tested it.
It looks like this cheap buck converter from aliexpress has two underspeced electrolytic capacitors. I will try to replace them with larger values indicated in the schematic that I found in datasheet of the XL4015 (main chip). Look at the picture.

Hi, just wanted to say that it works now. You can use buck converters with even 12V2A=24W psu-s but you need to make sure that capacitor values are good enough. I just replaced capacitors on my converter to values stated in schematic and it works great.

If you power devies from ps2 usb ports(like scalers) better use higher rated psu or it will not start every time. I currently use 19V2.3A=43.7W and it start every time.
