PS3 Project RSX Boost: Overclock your Retail PS3 RSX Speeds (ps3 cfw only)

I have ordered a second CECH-25XX to install the 600/750 Overclock on, I have also ordered the necessary equipment to record PS3 footage so if I get time I will do framerate comparison if I can find a good framerate analysis tool. I will also try and compare temps before and after.

I have also a power usage wall plug monitor, if I can figure out a way to integrate this information into the video I will but no promises anything will come out of this.

Should a stable overclock be settled on, is it possible to make this overclock permanent on a console? so even if you install OFW the overclock stays enabled?

I saw one seller on eBay in the UK claiming he modified the syscon to change the fan speeds so that modified fan speeds can work even on OFW, is this possible too with the overclock or was the eBay seller blowing smoke?

installed the rebug d-rex 600 - 750 on my E01. seems to be running fine no issues in game. ps2 emulation seems to be unchanged.
console is delidded and repasted 19 blade fan

uncharted 2 running at a locked 30 temps cpu 65 gpu 54. how do i tell with the plugin what clocks the gpu and rsx are running?

If you use webMAN MOD, update to the latest build currently available and reboot.

Once it return to XMB, press L3+R3 and it will load VshFpsCounter by TheRouletteBoi.
The latest version of his plugin shows the FPS and CPU/GPU clocks & temperatures.

Hi Zecoxao, Thank you for posting this project & I wish you & MikeM64 the best of luck with finding a software method for using full CFW on Superslims as being able to use CFW with that sweet 28nm RSX especially with overclocking will be very interesting.

I've just looked up the graphics chips the RSX 28nm uses (Samsung 237 K4G10325FG-HC15) and it looks like it is using 2x 128MB GDDR5 chips from the datasheet i've read so it would be even more interesting to see if overclocking the RAM is better or worse on that memory configuration compared to the traditional 4x 64MB GDDR3 used in the other RSX's.

Have a great day all.

I tried the evilnat 4.88 CFW 600-750 On My CECHA01 and I can honestly say dont bother with this model. even with the fan at 45% by default with webmanMod the RSX cranked up to 56C and since I put Auto fan speed on 55C the fan began to crank up constantly barely 1 minute after starting to run GOW ascension. I dont know how hot it got after that I shut it down and returned to the normal CFW. its just too loud...but I must admit it ran a bit better even from just the XMB but it could have been because I just installed that CFW (it resetted some settings) I did not open the console ever so... if you do it right you will probably get better results. But from scratch like I did, its a NO for now or maybe even ever!

Gave it a fair shot this time with Killzone 3 on 4.89 and the reason why it was so loud is because it actually goes a little over 55C so I cranked up the Auto FAN back to 68C and it stays at my default 45% fan speed, there is definitely a difference with Killzone 3 its alot better so much so I had to reduce de sensitivity! GOW ascension runs fine but simetimes things load faster than others. If you can stand The CECHA01 at 45% fan speed you should be fine, heck I would even say its Better! Its about 10C hotter on both the CPU and RSX

that will be really helpful for a lot of people including me because I'm interested on doing this but I need people to test it even further more to tell if its actually worth it

thx

The story about the syscon thermal config is true, because the PS3 firmware installers doesnt updates it
But in the way how this overclock patches has been released (as a patched lv1.self) the clocks would be restored to default if you install a OFW

As far i understood from one of the posts written by @M4j0r it seems this RSX clock settings are inside syscon too (not sure about it)... so i guessed the default lv1.self is trying to read them... and the patches are hardcoding it (instead of allowing lv1.self to load them from syscon)
In that case i guess yeah... this patches could work in OFW (and HEN) if are applyed to syscon

i have an e01 and changing the thermal paste and installing a 19 blade fan helps alot. mine didnt get over 55c. There is a risk of killing the 90nm rsx but if it dies you can swap in a 40nm rsx

For sure swapping a 90nm for a 40nm RSX is possible, but it's very difficult, and without all the right tools it could even not be possible. @PostalDude__ has an overclocked 40nm RSX BC (CECHA01) PS3 and has been playing around / testing with different thermal compounds, graphite thermal pads, and testing temps on games like TLOU, GTA5, GT6 etc, etc ...and from my memory his overclocked 40nm RSX rarely goes over (around) 60°C in game.

Is there someone who is offering this as a service who is reputable? I have a CECHA console I would be interested in having this done, especially if I can get this recording/framerate analysis/power usage monitoring tools figured out to compare it against a stock CECHA.

If you are in the USA, then you could contact @Computer Booter who offers this service, plus he has done lots of Frankies, he has a tech shop in California. You could always send / mail your PS3 to him if you wanted. He also does live streams on Youtube so you could maybe watch the surgical operation live, which is alot of fun.

If you live in Europe, then you could contact @vyktormvmpay25 who also offers this service from Romania, both of these guys are experts.

Amazing job, installed the modified firmware on my repasted slim 2004A, absolutely no stability issues whatsoever, fan speed on average around 35% and it stays around 67 degrees celsius. I've been playing a lot of World at War, and it stays locked at 60fps way more often than before

On early firmwares Syscon will use the values from Syscon to overwrite the ones in lv1. On later firmwares lv1 doesn't use the Syscon values anymore.

Ok, when you mentioned it for first time i was trying to find some info about this process in wiki (as far i remember is mentioned in the EEPROM lists) but i could not find more info so i still had many doubts... and eventually i left my doubt unsolved, but it was one of the things i was planning to ask you eventually, thx for the clarification :D

I "fixed" a word in your quote, did you mean the lv1 is the responsible to read that value from syscon EEPROM, right ?
In other words... the lock in the latest firmwares happens because the old versions of lv1 was reading the CELL clocks from syscon, but the new lv1 versions are not reading it

In that case it sucks a bit because i guess we cant patch lv1 to recover that feature, and downgrading lv1 doesnt looks like a good idea
