PS3 PS3 12gb and external hard drive

Hello everyone ,

I bought a new 12GB PS3 and I use an external hard drive to store the games, I managed to install around 10 games, however the game updates are installed on the console's internal hard drive and not on the external hard drive, how do I install everything on the external hard drive as well as the dlcs, pkgs and even the game updates?

If I create a game folder in dev usb 00 and copy the updates from the "game" folder of devhdd0 will it work?

Yes, but you need to map the path /dev_hdd0/game to /dev_usb000/game

webMAN MOD does it automatically if you press SELECT+SQUARE.

There are some limitations:
- The USB device must be formatted in FAT32
- Therefore the games with files larger than 4GB are not compatible
- The performance can be slower than the internal HDD storage

If you do gamei on external with game data tool, maybe. I'm not really sure

Yes, GAMEI is an alternative method to play games from external USB drive with the same limitations above.

GAMEI folder can be user also to play PSN games from ps3netsrv, but it has the limitation that the remote folder is read-only. Therefore it will not work for games that create or update files in /game folder. The files must be copied after play the game at least once from the internal HDD.

honestly, I'd just buy a cheap used HDD (for example 250gb) and set it up as internal storage. The 12Gb model is pretty useless without it. Also if you do some wrong customization or change critical boot files you'll end up with a brick that you can't fix.

If you have an internal HDD, if you screw something up, you can always take the disk out, format , and have a second chance.

btw, NEVER INSTALL CCAPI if you use HEN. You'll get a nice brick.

I think @esc0rtd3w might blacklist the CCAPI gameID on HEN at some point.

Some simple (but not ideal) alternatives are:
  1. When HEN is enabled, use map_path to redirect the EBOOT.BIN to a file. I usually use /dev_flash/vsh/resource/explore/xmb/null.xml for this kinda stuff.
  2. Use a custom filter in category_game.xml to exclude the CCAPI gameID from being shown. I was only able to hide it in the default sorting; others require edits to registory.xml, which I still haven't figured out.

I actually own one of those 12GB superslims. I'd definitely get an internal hdd for it. it will ask if you want to copy the contents of the 12GB emmc to the internal hdd, which takes about 20 minutes iirc. the system seems to store a copy of the firmware, settings, etc. on the emmc, because when I sold my internal hdd and put the console into storage for a year or two, then brought it out with a new hdd, I wasn't forced to reinstall the firmware.

It is not copy but only place for it. We thinking that on eMMC models, stuff is organized like in NAND ones with difference that there is place for VHDD in eFlash, just like VFLASH on NORs on HDD.

that would explain why it didn't ask to copy any data with the second hdd iirc. I don't remember it asking that anyway. I think it just required a quick format. the superslim is my legit system. I still have two cfw systems actually, but they're not plugged in. I need to sell them. well, I did sell my main one, but the person said there were issues ejecting discs, so he returned it. I'll have to test that at some point. I never intend to use them again, aside from maybe testing that. plus, the other is my banned unit, which can't be worth much considering. both are cfw systems though, with 1TB/750GB hdds. if it were me, though, I might prefer a banned unit, so that I never had to worry about that sort of thing.
