PS3 PS3 CECH 3004b with EADP 185AP psu shuts down randomly with no beeps or lights

Hello, i have a ps3 slim CECH3004b with EADP 185AP psu which after repasting (arctic mx4) and cleaning everything (it had literally a pile of dust lol) does the same thing again and again even if i don't game on it. The system software has the 4.88 version and it's unmodded.
From what i learned so far the problem might be the PSU which cannot deliver enough power, but it doesn't make sense since the ps3 shuts down the same way even if it's just on the main screen, not doing anything with it and the temps are normal i guess. Unfortunately this PSU does not have the screws you find in the 250aps so i can't do anything with it.. if someone can help me understand the real problem or help me find some other info from the console so people from this forum can understand what's happening with my console i will be glad to do. I've already searched about my particular problem but i couldn't find anything relevant, just for the other PSU's.. Should i just order another psu (the same model) or is there anything to do? The fan is working, i have a crucial mx500 1tb ssd in it which worked fine before cleaning (i could watch netflix and play games for hours before cleaning and repasting) so i really don't know what's happening.

Well, to dont walk in circles the best thing you could do is to try with another PSU, but you dont have other and you dont want to risk in buying one blindly (good decission because by now you are not 100% sure if the problem is inside the PSU)
So the cheapest solution is to do the mod to use a PC ATX PSU, just to see if the PS3 works normally with it

There are a couple of tutorials in the PS3 hardware subforums about how to power a PS3 with a PC ATX PSU, is easy and doesnt needs to be pretty... is just for a temporal test
 
If it turns on, you didn't break anything. Said that, I'd take out the HDD and turn it on without it, and wait. If it happens again, remove the BD drive and grab that jumper (a few wires that connect PSU with mobo and power it with 5v) and, by taking with one hand all the wires, with the other grab the plastic adaptor and push the wires inside of it, in both outputs. This could be the problem, since with only one of them being loose, you have no +5v, then, no "turning on" ability, even if the PS3 is already turn on.

If this isn't the problem, probably it happens the same witht the grey power wires from the BD drive to the console, creating some little short. Same with flex connector.

Make sure everything is properly connected and use a flat screwdriver to remove every connector.

i'm really sorry that i did not amswer to this thread until now but i was out of my country and had other things to do so the PS3 was no longer a priority. I will search for the atx psu tutorials since i have 2 pc's which lay around and if it's not that hard to do, i will try adapting it for the ps3.. unfortunately i don't know how to work on electronics (i'm a musician) and i'll try to do things that i'm sure i won't screw up.
For the record, BD means blu-ray disk? if so, then i already checked and rechecked the blu-ray drive cables and conections + everything else including the psu connectors and fan connector. But again, i will try testing with a PC psu if i can.. if not i will just buy another psu
 
you said you reapplied paste? i remember i had a console one time that was overheating but the fans werent ramping up to much before the console shut itself off. i happened to lose a few thermal pads from the motherboard. maybe you knocked off a thermal pad or two from a component on the motherboard? when the console shuts itself off, do you see any blinking red leds or ylod or anything?
 
no beeps, no lights no nothing. once it overheated but i didn't connect the fan.. now it just freezes in game and shuts down. i bought a thermal pad just in case i need one (as you said, maybe i did something wrong but honestly i don't think so because i didn't throw any pads and i also made pictures before opening the console with every step and i didn't see anything abnormal). if someone can show me pictures which every chip which has thermal pads so i can cut some and put on them if i have any thermal pads missing?

if i had a 30xx model, i would gladly disassemble it and take some pictures. but the thermal pads are not something most people pay attention to. also, i am not trying to rag you or anything, but if you took detailed pics every step of the way, you wouldnt need someone else to post pics... if you already had them.

anyway, from this thread, you have two options so far. try an atx psu and see if that will fix the issue (is not hard to hook up. i have one permanently hooked up to a sff psu and it works great), or when you take the ps3 apart again, look for any components that have thermal pads, and see if you can find any of the same components that have missing thermal pads and replace if needed. let us know the outcomes
 
Sorry but i got lost in the grammar thingy.
What i wanted to say was that i had pictures. since then i already knew more or less the way to assemble/dissasemble the ps and i considered that i don't need the pictures anymore since i won't open it for a while (both ps4 and ps3). this was my mistake, i know.. i really hope i won't have any issue after i finish troubleshooting this ps3, but if i will have in the future, to dissasemble any of them, i will make and keep every photo i make while dissasembling.
i'm really sorry about my english grammar but unfortunately i don't have many friends or aquintances from across the world where i can write or speak in english.

Since PS3 Slim there are not much thermal pads from factory, as far i remember there are only a couple small ones... lets say of the size of a bean, located on top of a couple of components related with CELL/RSX power (very close to them)
Is very easy to miss them because sometimes they falls appart to the floor when you "open the sandwich" of the metal shields that covers the motherboard, if you miss them that components could overheat and burn

If you have some doubt about the location of the thermal pads of any PS3 or PS4 model the trick is to take a good inspection of that metal shields, there is always a "bump" on the metal where is supposed to be located the thermal pad with a little "dot" (to prevent the thermal pad to escape from his position)

Other than that... we are free to add more thermal pads in other places of the motherboard.. you know the theory is we are transfering heat from the motherboarrd ---> to the metal shield
But in the practise there are many areas of the motherboard that are not so hot to require a thermal pad
The hottest area is around CELL/RSX and usually there is not any good place around them to add thermal pads

I would say a thermal pad on top of the WiFi/BlueTooth module would help... but thats because that module generates a good amount of heat by itself, is usual to read people reporting problems with it, and most probably is because it overheated
