Ps3 cechco2

Forum Noob
Hi all,
just managed to get my hands on one of the cleanest backwards compatible ps3s ive ever seen and wanted to get some advice from the forums about what the best measures for preservation would be to take as id like this to last a long time, obviously i plan on jailbreaking it and running webman mod for fan control but ive got a few questions

1. does the cechc model come stock with a 15 blade or 19 blade fan? as i have a 19blade fan to replace it if not
2. due to its low amount of usage (which ive determined by it being on 3.60 ofw and having like 3 game saves from 2008 on the console) is it worthwhile cracking it open and putting some new thermal paste on the heatsink as it has still got its warranty sticker in mint condition
3. does this console need to be delidded with very low playtime if im using fan control settings via webman and am keeping it in a well ventilated area or am i just being ocd about this console

any other advice for lifespan increases would be amazing,

Thanks again to everybody who reads this and has any info to offer cheers.

Sounds like a nice find!

I'd change the thermal paste at least on heatsinks - and check the condition of thermal transfer "pillows" while at it. Thermal paste and those "pillows" do age on my experience even with little/no usage. While at it check the fan blades and if it's 15 blade change that too, although the early models iirc tend have 19 blade ones factory installed. Also, replace the battery. If it's not dead yet, it probably will be soon.

Delid would probably be a good idea if you're proficient enough of doing that or have someone you're comfortable with giving the job to. I wouldn't start practicing delidding myself on backward compatibles though :D

Although intact warranty sticker is cool, it doesn't lower console temps. Rather be safe and sorry without sticker (or with broken sticker) than have the console YLOD and die. Boils down to "is this a museum/display piece or a system I'll be gaming on?"

Well said honestly, think that might be my next move when my arctic mx-4 arrives in the mail aswell as giving it a 1tb hdd upgrade thankyou for the advice on your end :)

delid can destroy ps3 if you do it wrong. change paste and check the temps. if they are fine, let it be.

I compleately agree with how risky the delid process can be as have done it on two systems before 1 went perfectly and the other well lets not talk about that ahahhahahaha in saying that though if i was to successfully delid a minimal use console how much of a temperature drop could i expect to see? And do you think it would be worthwhile to look at doing it at a later date when i see a rise in temps after a few years of use etc

i do not know how much difference it could make. i think it is wise to wait at least untill you see what the temps with just the paste change. you know the danger so it is up to you. :)

Solid advice ill do a basic change on the heatsink and bump my fan speed to 24% and see what my temps are looking like after about an hours worth of gameplay of in a somewhat intensive game if im looking at pushing over that 65-70• safezone by alot ill look into the delid, tbh considering the ammount of usage the system has im skeptical of whether it needs that currently in such a low usage lifecycle but i appreciate your advice Coro :)

@littlebalup im also curious if were considering fans what your opinion on the aps227 psu is due to the cechco2 having that as its stock psu to my understanding as i think the aps226 was locked to Japan and the usa for the A and B series while the C series which was prominent in the uk aus and new zealand had the 227 and if id see better cooling results if i was to exchange my psu :)

Just wanted to give everybody an update, opened the console last night and virtually no dust was inside couldnt even see a spec of it, when i got to the fan shroud with rsx and cell some of the paste was still wet and due to my lack of a jewellers screwdriver to remove the hdd caddy i just repasted with a bunch of as5 and called it a day cant post temp results as dont currently have my 1tb hdd for the swap so havent bothered with the jailbreak as of yet but will post temp results on 24% fan as soon as it arrives was also pleased to find the nidec fan inside so that was sick :) cheers to all who helped

FWIW, I'd set the fan speed at least to 35ish percent at first and then see how the system temp behaves. Rather be safeish with BC than have temps rise quite fast to low eighties Celsius (176ish Fahrenheit).

Good info to know now, do you know of any other ways to help reduce temps other than running a higher fanspeed + a repaste that i could implement when i undertake the jailbreaking process tonight? Have heard of people drilling out holes around the fan but otherwise is that about all i can do? Cheers :)

I'd pass those holes, just start with higher fanspeeds and see how the system behaves temperaturewise. I've set the automatic target at 64C with Webman mod, fanspeed is around 32-40% with my fats. Slightly noisy, but at least the risk of YLOD is mitigated.

Going off my repasted cechjo2 i think my fan speed is set to about 30% and 35% when emulating ps2 and i see about 65 - 70 degrees under load should i expect to see similar or better results? This is keeping in mind that this is a delidded console
