PS3 PS3 Slim 3004B - BD Drive swappable?

Hey,

Got a ps3 slim 3004B with broken bd drive.

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/KEM-450EAA

It reads DVD/CD but no Bluray discs. So I guess its very likely to be a faulty blue laser lens. Checked all ribbons on continuity, no fault to the cables and as this ps3 got its daughter board on the mainboard I guess this is fine to cause it reads dvd and cd.

Now I want to buy a new laser unit to swap it out, is this possible or do I need a remarry in theory like on fat ps3's ? I know its not capable of installing a cfw.

There is no need to remarry in PS3 models equal or newer than CECH-25xx
The results of your tests (being able to read CD and DVD but not BD) uses to indicate the problem is in the laser pickup
The only thing you need to do is to replace the laser pickup and it should work

Try to find the KES-470A, both are compatibles, but the bigger number indicates that is a newer revision of the part, so in theory should be better

That sounds great. I will order one in china and swap it out. Way to expensive on local ebay or something, for the price I could get a whole working ps3 instead
Nice to know that there are two pickups compatible. I cleaned my og one but no time to reassemble it. I will try tomorrow, but I have not much hope, these tweaks and easy fixes for optical drives never worked out for me xD ps2 laser pod tweaking back in the days?! Didn't worked a single time always need a ne pickup xD

off topic:

Yeah but like I said nice to know, thank you :) I bought a bunch of broken Playstation 2 and 3's to fix them just for fun. I mean the actual world wide situation does lead into some more free time just fixed some cechc and for now 1 slim ps3 and 2 ps2 slims. Combined with the awesome psx place community it is a lot of fun :)

I would like to fix some ps4's but most of them got blod that isn't that easy to fault find and the fixen often hardcore without knowlage of reballing and proper tools for it. Ps3 ylod most of the times is just a "broken" rsx cap, thats a easy one for me to swap for tantal ones.

The nice thing about the PS3 lasers is that is not needed to calibrate them (like the PS2 ones that needed it and was a pain to do)
In PS3 you just need to remove the old one, mount the new one, and thats all

To replace it you just need to unscrew one of the screws that keeps one of the rails in his position (that cylindrical bars at the sides)
Additionally, if you want to do some manteinance you could clean the old lube on that rails and add new lube (the solid vaseline works nice for it, available in drugstores)

That is really nice, you're right. The ps2 diagnostics mode helped me for the calibration a lot. In most cases after initilizing this, the laser worked perfectly fine again but tweaking the pods is a pain xD

Yeah I got some plastic grease and metal grease here. Got it from automotive part shop but is the same stuff but in bigger quantity and waaayy cheaper. For plastic grease you should take care that it is one that does not dry the plastic out and make it fragile. Some greases you can buy are for metal only and would destroy pastics over time. And grease in a smoking hot ps3 xD should be capable of some degrece heat ^^ Got all I need for any kind of repares here, besides reballing. :)

Yeah, there are some lubes/greases (oils and other stuff based on petrol intended to use in metals) that are going to make a chemical reaction with the plastics and thats bad because are going to short the lifespan of the plastic part
Thats why i mentioned the vaseline (though the vaseline is another derivated from petrol), because is fine for plastics, easy to find in drugstores and cheap, but if you have some lube for automotive intended to use in plastics thats going to be better for sure :encouragement:
Just another detail worthy to be mentioned... everytime we lube something is needed to cleanup the old lube very well because we dont want to mix 2 different lubes (with different chemical composition), this uses to degrade the new lube

Thats the only thing to worry about laser manteinance in PS3
1) remove the old laser pickup
2) clean the lube in the rails and the wormscrew the best you can
3) apply the new lube
4) mount the new laser pickup (in any position of the wormscrew, this is another nice feature of the PS3, is adjusted automatically)
5) turn on the console and let the laser move a bit back and forth along the wormscrew
6) turn off the console and remove the excess of lube (cummulated at the endings of the rails in step 5)

Thanks for all your great tips, verry appreciated! :) I will give it a nice clean before mounting the new pickup. But for now waiting till it arrives, this can take some weeks ^^ thats the step I hate the most haha

Now I got the new laser pickup 470, put it it but now it does not work at all. It acts like you put the disc in up side down. You pit it in, the drive makes the normal suck in noise than you here the laser trying to find something. After a second you hear a part of this suck in sound again like he trys to re insert the disc again it without putting the disc out, it trys reading again and stops.

So it seams a 470 is not compatible with this or I got a broken laser.

Start the system with the top off of the disc drive, insert a disc of any kind past the sensor but pull back and don't let it go inside the disc drive. Check and see if either laser lights up. Red will be for standard CDs/DVDs and the purple laser is going to be for your Blu-Ray discs. Ps3 laser lens doesn't have an anti-static solder ball to remove so it wouldn't be that causing your issue. It's always possible you happened to get a dud laser lens. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. As far as pot tweaking goes, i don't believe these lasers have potentiometers which is kind of shame. I personally always loved tweaking them.

Check again the connectors, probably you know it but just incase... the connectors have a "clip" to open/close them, it needs to be made in this order
1) open connector clip
2) insert ribbon cable
3) close connector clip

Or maybe is because there is some part displaced, open it again and take a good look at all that levers and gears at top of the disc for the "suck/eject" mechanics

Keep us advised of the results with the new laser, if it makes you feel better i can tell the same would have happened to me if i was in your boots
What you said in your first post that it was reading CD and DVD fine, but not able to read BD... thats pretty much the best indication we can get that tells the laser is faulty (usually is the diode specific for BD that went burnt)
It happened 3 times in a PS3 from a familiar that was abused for years, and after that test i always bought a laser (the cheapest i found), and the new laser always solved the problem

Did your laser work?
And where did you buy it?
Cheers! ;)
