PS3 PS3 turns on for second then goes back to red light

I found a PS3 service manual PDF online but it's really only schematics, disassembly and parts list. Someone was dumping this PS3 and didn't know whether it works or not. So I have no history of op prior to failure. I plugged it in and turned on power switch. Red light came on. I pressed the 'on' button and blue (or green) light came on for about a second. and I heard fan spin up, then unit went back to red light. Of course it's probably either a bad power supply or some other bad assembly causing the power supply to shut back down. Has anyone had experience with this problem. I'd like to be able to first confirm the power supply is ok by disconnecting it, putting some resistors on it and measuring voltages. I searched around the net a little so far and haven't found some detailed hardware analysis help, but I'll keep searching and also will check Youtube. Thanks.

Update. When the PS3 turns off it very briefly flashes yellow then goes to red and flashes 3 times then stays solid red. I found this video on Youtube but it didn't work for, and I really didn't expect it to.
The guy says unplug the PS3 and press the ON button for 20 seconds, apply power and try to turn it on again. The assumption would have to be that some residual charge in the power supply capacitors would allow the power supply to work at full voltage briefly until the circuits caused the power supply to slowly turn off as the caps discharged. The slow turn-off would apparently cause some reset in the circuit I guess. I don't think so.
