PS3 Question about OFW>CFW>OFW for BD repair

To start, I've been fixing gaming systems' hardware for about 5 years, but I'm beginning to start to branch away from just Nintendos and Ataris to jump into software fixes (at least more advanced than the ol' USB update).

I bought a CECHA01 PS3 (December '06) recently and it surprisingly still powers on no problem. The actual problem is the previous owner or repair person evidently did not know much about the system, because the disc drive spins the disc at the correct speed, but the system does not recognize the discs, and the clock does not spin like it would if it were working. I had swapped in a known working 400a laser to make sure, and the problem persisted. So I am assuming that a previous tenant of this machine bought a new disc drive and just threw it in, then sold it when it didn't work.

My dilemma is this is an A01 that is on 3.50 OFW, and if I were to go through the process I have seen to remarry the Bluray drive daughterboard to the motherboard using CFW, would I be able to revert back to this 3.50 (or similar) OFW with no problem? Or would it be possible to go back to 4.91 for online usage like trophy hunting? Are these even problems worth solving? Any advice and/or help in this endeavor would be appreciated.

Yes, you can always downgrade (up to the minimum factory version) if you are on CFW.

If you are on CFW 3.50 you can remarry your BD drive without updating your FW, although it's not a "2 clicks and you are done" solution.

Here is the old method used for FW 3.55 and below: https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Remarry_Bluray_Drive
It is currently on 3.50 OFW, so I would need to install CFW to remarry, but as long as I can revert back to OFW then my worries are subsided.

I had seen a few walkthroughs so I know it's not a simple process, but with the resources you provided and other stuff online, I feel confident it should be a process I am capable of. I appreciate the help.
