PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

I am pleased to hear that. I have 6 330uf capacitors that I removed from the dead CECHG. Can I use these for now? Or should I wait for 470uf capacitors from Aliexpress?
Yes, you can try the 330uF.

About the ali express caps, they are usually binned rejects with greater than 20% margin. Or they can be overstock. It's a crap shoot. You should know that ESR is extremely important! Which ones did you get?

https://m.tr.aliexpress.com/item/32...ga6xh3qcadr917e129aa6dc2186e632a1fd983&gclid=
Keep it in English please. From google translate:
"Okay, then I remove a NEC/TOKIN capacitor in the processor part (non-CELL and RSX side of the motherboard). I'm going to replace it with four 330uf tantalum capacitors. I don't need to wear a jumper, do I? By the way, here are the tantalums I got from aliexpress:"

If you leave the other 3 tokins, then no you don't need jumpers wires. Those tantalums don't say what model number it was, so I can't look up the ESR. I highly suggest using them off a dead motherboard or buying them from a reputable company.

We finally made it! Today I removed one of the old tokens and replaced it with 330uf tantalum capacitors that I removed from a dead CECHG. And it worked! I played Tlou, GT6 and Uncharted 2 to try it out. They worked flawlessly. I can't thank you enough. I hope it helps someone who has a similar problem as mine. Here is my modded and repaired CECHC04:

Yup, that's how proper diagnosis and repair is supposed to go. Great job keeping your head screwed on tight and working the problem. Congratz and enjoy!

Just to warn you. You may need to replace more tokins in the future. If you remove more than 2 of them, you will need bridge wires. Good luck!

Also, this could be a false positive. Give the console some tests over the next few weeks and keep us updated if the fix holds. This initially positive result is normal if there is a BGA/bump defect. Time will tell, but your error log didn't indicate the tell tale signs of BGA/Bump defects. So I'm optimistic.

So I have a fat ps3 CECHH 01 console with ylod. I just read the first page and bought 20 tantalum caps for it and replaced all the ones on the back and one of the tokins on the front for the rsx, before learning about syscon and about tokin not being the best solution. Is it worth me committing to replacing the rest of the tokins since most are already swapped or should i stop now and do syscon check? also since all on back are replaced should i do the bridge wire?

Lets see the error log first.

most likely the original error has been erased off the end of the list (only holds 32). If the tantalum install is solid, any new errors should show the original fault (assuming it wasn't actually to totins to begin with).

H models have a higher liklyhood of surviving long enough for the tokins to fail. So there is a chance your problem was the tokins. However, in my experiance bad tonkins usually cause intability, random YLOD. It rare the cause one shorter than 5s. So a YLOD less than 2s long is usually something else.

Because that shit mobo sur001 won't go whatever I do(kind hdmi/av won't kick in) going to port all cpu set and rsx to one working jsd board. When I say I've looked on anything, I've been looking for 3 days now on all parts over mobo and become insane. I just want to install Linux on latest unit and I have to use those sur001 parts. Hopefully I'll come back soon with good progress.

from what i can see, rsx needs a reball. I don't have the money to build a reball station right now, but I do have a 858d hot air station, is it worth putting some flux and trying to reflow the rsx?

I am using Panasonic 2R5TPE470M7 capacitors.
470 uF, 2.5 VDC, 7 mOhms, 1.8 mm

I already soldered 2 caps and now the system finally turns on (after pressing the power button 5-6 times).
It crashes during games so i need to put more caps.

My soldering skills are pretty terrible so it takes me a hour to get a good joint.
So with a wire that i already soldered will be way easier for me.
I checked with multi meter and the resistance from the other side of the cap to the solder joint and it seems fine.

Its your property. Reflows do not last and usually cause more damage than they are worth. Especially for a non backwards compatible model that can be cheaply replaced.

My advice? Buy a 40nm slim or 28nm SS model.

No, not as you as drawn you can't. The + rails are on the outside and GND on the inside. So the bottom caps should be flipped 180-degrees from how you have them drawn.

Before you do anything more, you should dump the errorlogs to see if you're waisting time. Having to "pump" the power switch is a classic "warm start YLOD" which indicates thermomechanical reconnection of BGA/bump defects. It is meaningless in the context of the tokins.

Oops,I forgot to flip them in the picture.
So if i were to flip those to the correct position, would this be fine?

Looking at the symptoms,it appears that it's both warm startup and the tokins.
It began with only intensive games and at specific moment i got YLOD and it had progressed to the point that the console won't turn on at all,
So i soldered 2 caps in a piggy back configuration and now it turns on.

Then yeah, give it a try. But if/when you get it stable enough please dump the errorlog. It would be better to have it at the start, to see the original errors, not the ones you generated in testing. Because of course now that you have started removing tokins the errors will be related.

Anyway, if you get it working be sure to test it over the next 2 weeks. full warmup and cooldown cycles will allow the warping stress to relax. If there was/is a BGA/bump defect it will most likely reappear in that time. Sometimes it takes longer, but not often.

So i added 2 more caps to the RSX side - Didn't change anything.
I will later try with the CELL side.
I did some testing and there are the games that don't trigger YLOD at all:
Ridge Racer 7
PS2 Disc games

I guess that those utilize the CELL less than rest of the games out there?

lets see the errorlog. at this point were just guessing. If you replaced a few tokins and it didnt work, then it doesnt sound like the filter. What about the PSU? Do you have another you can try?

Well,I didn't touch the CPU side at all,and i just add caps in parallel to the original tokins,
I don't remove them.

So i will try adding caps to the CPU side of the tokins.

As for the syscon error log i currently don't have what i need to do that.

And no,I didn't try another PSU,i don't have one and i can't know whether the unit i will buy is good or bad.
So if there is a ATX to PS3 adapter i will be able to test that.

If the console is jailbroken, use PS3 advanced tools to dump the errorlog. If the log will dump to usb root.
