Another console revived!...

Got myself a 60GB PS3 a few days ago, changed thermal paste since the fan was too loud.
After a day of usage it started shutting down with YLOD after some play time.
Today it didn't even boot, just straight YLOD. Since I already knew about this tutorial I had some replacement caps ready.
I used 6.3V 330uF tantalum capacitors. The console revived and booted at first attempt and still running with no issues.

YLOD happens because of several reasons. When you change caps you provide lots of heat around RSX. The heat hides the actual reason of YLOD temporarily and it boots up but will not last long. You are recommended to get a syscon err log to see what cussed the latest YLOD. now that it's working you don't need to solder serial wires to the motherboard.
Check this out; SYSCON tutorial here

Thanks for the info, but I'm unable to install and run PS3HEN on this console (exploit always fails for whatever reason).
I've heard about the remote play method to install HEN, how does that work? is there a tutorial?

HEN enables piracy but I have doubts it gets you access to level of reading syscon?
Anyway. As it is mentioned in the article I linked you, DO NOT attempt to jail break it. Just do the direct method.
Good luck.

Hi, last week i replaced all the nec tokin of my ps3 (i cant find my old post's with the details of my problems).
During disassembly of the last one nec tokin, i accidentally hit a very small component that has came off (see attached picture).
I have resoldered it, but i don't know if i have resoldered it in the right direction.
Can you say me what type of component is (resistor, capacitor, inductor or else) and if it have a direction of assembly?
I have cleaned all internal components with air, changed the thermal pad's, thermal paste and reassembled all the components.
Now the ps3 start, after 7 sec of green light flash 4 times ylod for 3 sec, then green light for 11 sec then again ylod for 4 sec and finaly the consol arrive at the xmb.
I played several hour's monitoring also the temperature, and never go over 65°C for CELL e 60°c for RSX (max 37% fan).
I have redumped again the syscon but it is the same before the mod (i think is normal that is tha same until a fatal shutdown).
Can the very small component that i have resoldered make the 2 ylod status during boot-up?
Or is something else?
Thank you everyone.

Little MLCCs or resistors like that don't have polarity, so they can be soldered in any way, so that should be fine. But man your PS3 is doing some strange things, i don't think i've ever heard of a PS3 doing what your one does.

Surely you are getting some new Syscon error codes each time your PS3 YLODs like that during start up? What are your Syscon error codes, can you post the log here so we can check.

Here are the Syscon Error Codes and what they mean:-
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Syscon_Error_Codes#Error_code_format

Looks like you need to replace the Tokins on the RSX, you did half of them already (2) on the RSX, yes? Please can you post a photo of your RSX NEC Tokin replacements you did already, so we can see if there are any short circuits.

Maybe you could replace all (4) of the NEC Tokins on the RSX

Your PS3 syscon error codes description:-

1002 (Power RSX)

  • Components Involved:
    • RSX (IC2001 on COK-001)
    • NEC/TOKIN Proadlizers (C6229/C6230/C6231/C6232 on COK-001)
    • Other nearby components of the power block
This error has been associated with insufficient Filtering on RSX_VDDC power line. There is a range of voltage ripple/noise that will cause this error before it gets so bad it causes an RSX_VDDC Power Failure (3004). YLOD's causing 1002's range in duration from 2 seconds to only occurring during intense games.

There are numerous SMD components involved in filtering, but the main concern are the NEC/TOKIN Proadlizers (capacitors). 1002 errors are the fingerprint of bad tokins.

- --- - --- - --- - --- - --- - --- - --- - --- - --- -

2124 (AV)
This error tends to cause a delayed Yellow Light Of Death (10s - 1min). Sometimes described as a Green Light Of Death (GLOD) or Red Light Of Death (RLOD).

2124 and 2024 errors have been fixed by replacing both the AV and HDMI encoders. One user reported 2024/2124 errors resolved by replacing the HDMI encoder. Another removed the HDMI encoder and tested the console without it. That console primarily filled the errorlog with 2124 errors, but a few 2024's as well. So it is unclear if 2124 is specific to the HDMI Encoder or AV Encoder. It seems it could be either.

I have replaced all nec tokin.

Yesterday i tried to play, ps3 turn on and green led stayed stable all time but no signal from hdmi and av output.
Furthermore all the 4 controller red led continue to blink and never stop (like when it tries to connect to ps3).

At this pont i have obtained the syscon with a FT232RL usb adapter and this is the result:

Thanks for the photos, well from your work it doesn't seem like any short circuits for the Tantalums, but as you can see from your error code 2124 (see below)

And you have confirmed no signal on hdmi or AV output.

Recently i had the same with a PS3, i thought it was GLOD, same as you describe with the DS3 controllers also, but i tried holding down the I/O button to enter video output format reset and it did fix it afterwards, i got video signal on AV cable.

Maybe try that just to see, turn off PS3 - connect just the AV cable (no HDMi cable connected) then turn on PS3 with the front I/O button, keep your finger pressing / holding the button, it should go 1 x beep, then 5 seconds later 2 x beeps - now let go of the I/O and wait a little bit to see if you get anything on screen (it can take some time) so wait a little.

Hi everyone
I'm from Iran and I have a problem
my English is not good
we have YLOD ps3 and show me only error 3003
I solder 16 pieces 470 2,5V (without bridge) and when I turn on the console, I can see the voltage before the tantalum capacitors and when I add bridges between two lines of the positive pad, the voltage disappears and I don't know what is voltage going???
I checked all FUSE, resistor and checked for find short but there is NO short in this board
I don't know what am I doing?

I whant to understand where error A0801002 is generated and if it is possible fix it.
How can i test if nec tokin give the right power supply to rsx?
Is obligatory the usage of an oscilloscope or a simple tester is enough?
(PS. i have a little oscilloscope DSO138, maybe it can be ok)
Seeing on ps3devwiki, it says that the error 1002 can be generated also by "Other nearby components of the power block".
On a VER 001 MOBO what are these nearby components?

Thank you again.

Could you 2 please do me a favor and come back after 2 weeks and let us know if these consoles are still working? It's important for my statistics. I use reports like this to rule out thermomechanical false positives. The number of actual tokin fixes may be higher, but we cannot confirm that because people do not return to tell us the console kept working and we cannot assume either way, making it difficult to know the real story.

Of course, having the SYSCON errorlogs would be EXTREEMLY helpful. So please post them also, if you can be at all bothered to do so.

The console in the recent pictures was done a year ago just was dealing with health and finally got to post the pics. As far as syscon error logs I do not have a reader, I would like to ad that I have had no problems with consoles that just need the tokins replaced which I have done quite a few lost count. If the gpu and cpu aren't cooked a simple correct reflow seems to do the trick and those consoles are still working and I haven't heard any complaints from my friends yet:rolleyes:
Also I would like to ad that the console in the pics has also been running Evilnats overclocked CFW 4.89. :grenade:

Then you can use PS3 Advanced Toolset to dump the log. Just download and install the Package. The tool will dump the log directly to the root of your USB.

I explained this in my SYSCON tutorial. I suggest you spend the $3 for a UART adapter if you think you'll ever need to fix a PS3 again. Of course, you have been around long enough to already know this.

Ok I will get the log homework going..lol, good suggestion on the adapter but it just isn't cost effective for me right now I already have to many consoles for my self . I'm also getting old!... lol I will probably have my DECR 1400 put in my coffin or burned with me...lol. I might just spend the 3 bucks. I'm not rich but I am a ps3 addict. I hope I find a rehab center exquisitely devoted for my ps3 addiction!

Hello,
I'm thinking of getting a BGA station for reball. I liked the IR6500. Will it work for me for PS3 and general use?
