PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

Freezing is not usually a tokins issue. Are you getting any YLODs? If so, can you dump the errorlogs? If your console is jailbroken you can used ps3 advanced toolset to dump them. But don't jailbreak in the state your console is now, it'll likely brick if it freezes diring the process. You'll have to use UART.
i spent 2 hours to fix it from ylod with my multimeter and install cfw but it is freeeeeeezing thanks for help anyway

I recently bought a ps3 fat 60gb to repair even with its warranty seal intact I decided to uncover it and do the maintenance the console at first turned on and the image was shown but after a while it showed green glith image with dots and the image froze after so many attempts it didn't show the image anymore now it's just a black screen it doesn't have any beeps it turns on normally and it only stays in a black image it doesn't even detect the control and check what the fault is and with the Syscon Error Codes will it be nec/tokin failure?

You can check that out here:

Doesn't look promising though…might need a reball.

try reflow if this worked then you need to reball if you have a multi meter so you can check the nec caps out of the board 2.5 ohms is ok

the RSX has failed, a new 40nm or 65nm RSX will need to be installed.

ok later I make the measurements and notice

the RSX has failed, a new 40nm or 65nm RSX will need to be installed.

ok where I am located they do not do that job hopefully that is not the fault but I still have to make some measurements and maybe apply a reflow to rule it out but reballing would be better

I also proceeded to remove the ihs from the cpu and the gpu and clean them when I check the wafers I saw that the cpu has some stains it seems that the cpu is the fault but I don't know later I show photos

the core is low impeedance and will typically measure between 2 and 4 ohms. Your multimeter will buzz in continuity mode. Check that the resistance isn't less than 0.5 ohms.

If it's short after removing all four tokins on each the line (either RSX or CELL side), then then which side is the short on? Processor or VRM? If Processor side, the core is shot and it needs replaced. If VRM side short, one of the buck regulators probably died. But it could be any of the SMDs in the area too.

Thanks for the reply!
I did measure similar values to what you mentioned.

The next this I saw was that an smd resistor was missing from the board. One of the four tiny resistors along the NEC/TOKIN capacitors. It's the one on the image attached, next to the red line I draw over.

What are the specs of that resistor in order to add it back?

Looks like a current sense pair. There are no schematic for the consoles after the SEM. So you will need a donor board to harvest from. Failing that, you can remove one of the others and measure it's value. Then buy another one. Donor is easier.

I'm not sure it's strictly needed. But should replace JIC.

Thank you all for responding, I'm waiting for more smd tantalum capacitors to arrive A few months ago I managed to repair two ps3 fat

the 40gb CECHG01 just changing the nec tokin for tantalum smd in the RSX only

The first one with 3034 is a false positive. Not a tokin issue. The second one was.
@ RIP-Felix:
Is it mandatory or necessary to flash the COK-001 board SYSCON in external mode (EEP SET 3961 01 00) before switching over to internal mode? Or can I just solder my wires from the USB/Serial adapter to the TX, RX, and DIAG (ground) and go directly to internal mode? Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Yes, internal access is disabled by default in Mullion syscons. There is only a single bit to change in order to enable it. Follow the SYSCON tutorial and you'll be golden.

I did turn the console on with the newly installed capacitors, without the resistor.
Everything we smooth till after some gameplay in GTA were it froze. Restart the console only to hear the 3 beeps and auto turn off.
It fired up again almost immediately though... But I didn't test it further.

I need to continue the gameplay after the restart from the 3 beeps and at least slightly verify that is a heat related issue or not.

Thanks for the info again!

I am getting the message:

"scopen response invalid" when trying to AUTH the SYSCON Internal commands.
Any ideas what may be wrong?

2124 (AV)
This error tends to cause a delayed Yellow Light Of Death (10s - 1min). Sometimes described as a Green Light Of Death (GLOD) or Red Light Of Death (RLOD).
2124 and 2024 errors have been fixed by replacing both the AV and HDMI encoders. One user reported 2024/2124 errors resolved by replacing the HDMI encoder. Another removed the HDMI encoder and tested the console without it. That console primarily filled the errorlog with 2124 errors, but a few 2024's as well. So it is unclear if 2124 is specific to the HDMI Encoder or AV Encoder. It seems it could be either.

I removed the hdmi ic and it's still the same, I just need to remove the composite AV ic
any ideas before removing the ic composite AV

I have a question regarding the hdmi ic of the ps3 fat 80gb, the ic is MN864709 since I can't get the datasheet, is that ic the same as that of the ps3 slim MN8647091?
