PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

Yes, very likely the only short. Those larger power caps on 3.3v MISC pull alot of current and experiance flexing due to their size. Ceramic doesn't flex well and they chip/break, their resistance increases then they burn out and then pop that fuse. Sounds like your issue.

Also, what you want are slow blow fuses to prevent them from popping from inrush currents when you first turn on or off the PSU. Just FYI.
I have seen the cok-002 voltage tree. When connected to the power supply, the standby LED lights up red. 5V is detected, but no 12v 3.3v 1.2v 1.0v is detected. Why is this? I am using a digital wanyongbiao

Only 5v_ever and 3.3v_ever is enabled in standby. All other rails will be switched on by syscon if you turn the system on, like felix said.

hi to all
first of all i would like to thank felix because at some point i semi fixed my ps3

so here is my story
my ps3 had ylod yes its strange :D so i managed to boot the ps3 with mane restarts (usualy when the console heats a litle boots normaly ) and i managed to get my errors 1001 and 1002 so i read about the fix here and i ordered all the parts that felix mentions
so i managed and replaced the two most common nec tokins and yes my ps3 now boots every time and i can play one game that it couldent. (call of duty 3 i can play for hours and no ylod any more)

so now i can play games yes but on some more demanding for example grand turismo 6 the game starts and after 2-3 mins of the game the ps3 shuts down and ylod again with error 1001 now.

the strange is that the errors 1001 is at year 2005 for some reason but my console time and date is correct.

so would like some help here should i replace all the nec tokins ? or is it something else?
the truth is that i do not want to mess with the nec tokins that are close to other components.

thanks in advance

RIP-Felix thanks for your pcb's, I got them & the extra caps for my ps3 off ebay & that american pcb fabricator for the blank pcb so I could replace both cap types on my fat ps3, ps3 working great now no resets or ylod, the intial repair shop I took it into had no idea how to fix it an just repasted the cpu, even though they said they checked the powerline traces on a oscilloscope.

PS3 SLIM CECH-2004B Issue: Turns On for 10–15 Seconds, Then Shuts Off (Not PSU or Battery)
Hi everyone,
I'm troubleshooting an issue with my PS3, and I could really use some advice. Here's the situation:
  • The console powers on for about 10–15 seconds and then shuts off.
  • I've ruled out the power supply; it's not the issue.
  • The battery isn't dead (I've checked it).
  • No error logs are being generated.
  • I've been using the top shell and HDD drive from another PS3 for repair/testing purposes.
  • The console was already open when I started working on it, so I'm not sure of its full history.
  • When I checked SYSCON, it shows FFFF FFFF, so I'm not getting any useful data from there.
  • I checked the hardware /motherboard and there is no visible damage.
Could this mean the system is bricked, or might there be another issue at play? Any suggestions on what to test or check next would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I have a ps3 fat cechk04 with DIA002 motherboard with immediate Ylod.

I have already replaced all the NEC tokens and made the jumper with thick wire.

From the Syscon log I only get error 3003, What should I check? Thank you.

3003 is a GLES error OpenGL so it's probably something gpu related, check the RSX chip reball it or maybe try swapping the caps on that side for ones with less signal noise & a lower overall capacitance, I used 3x330 instead of 470 on mine so it could be overloading it, the earlier fats use both 1200 & 1000 uF caps.

Was error 3003 not related to the CELL?

Sorry, I was looking at error codes not syscon.

3003 (CELL Core Power Failure)

This error will occur in the case of a PWR failure on the main core voltage of the CPU (VDDC). CPU Bulk filter caps (Eg. NEC/TOKIN) or any SMD in the Feedback and Compensation network of the Voltage Regulation module (VRM). Including the Buck Converters (AKA IOR Power Blocks).
A short Blu-Ray drive can cause this error as well. Be sure that your drive is going well before doing anything on your console.

Hello everyone, could you guide me on what scale I should do these measurements and if I should have the console in standby or not, my cecha 00 has the error code 22110 causing the fuse f6001 to burn, the console had error 3034, it was reflowed and turned on but after a while it crashed and I noticed that some capacitors were missing near the HDMI location, if you can guide me I would greatly appreciate it, thank you in advance

it just occurred to me, did anyone ever remove one of or several of the originals NEC/Tokin capacitors (undamaged) and measured them with a capacitance meter/esr meter to see how much if any they had degraded ? i mean yeah if you remove them you might as well replace them but still even for research purposes ?

It's virtually impossible unless you have a razor sharp bladed soldering iron at above 300C even with a heat gun fired directly at it, it still takes 2-3minutes to loosen it, the pcb acts a heat shield & gets red hot, the cleanist removal i've seen is with a chisel just whacking it off but you risk tearing the whole solder point track / pad off the pcb.

oh well, could be relegated to try getting them out in one piece only from junk boards, thats if its even possible then and you dont melt the cap itself in the process

maybe just to see how far off spec they have to get for it to become a YLOD

If you read the datasheet it tells you the operating time & temp before it loses capacitance when soldering them on, I suppose if you probed them with a therm whilst turned on it'd give you a rough value it's able to tolerate before they become useless.

our friend @RIP-Felix did pretty extensive write ups on the characteristics of the tokins and what to replace them with, including recommended esr ranges, etc.

Hi,
I was thinking that it will be easy fix CECHC03 When I got it was surprise for me, start normally but then after 30 s YOLD.
I have read the syscon errors:

I have replace firstly one side of nec tokins for tantals - not helped than second side near RSX, first put 5 pcs ( normaly put 11 pcs) - the same not work, I have added one more - nothing the same sometimes 2-3 s sometimes few min and YOLD
I measured the capacitance of capacitors 530-600 uF, (ESR below 10), maybe 11 or 12 is too much?

Do you have idea what can have influence more for the above errors?

I will try with the solutiion descriebed page 219 re vram capacitors

Hello,

I just replaced all the tokins on my CECHG/SEM-001 PS3 and it started perfectly fine and even played some games fine. But then it started freezing, showing random artifacts (on XMB for example it was showing blue shadow dots on the screen or random blinking dots) but now it won't event start. It boots to a black screen and freezes. If I boot to recovery menu, it shows OK, but there are some random minor blinking glitches.

I know HDD isn't good (bad sectors for over 10 years), I will start replacing it, but I would like to know if it could be something related to the nec tokins replacement. I did the bridge with silicone 22AWG wire, and as I said it started perfectly fine, no artifacts, no crashes.

Thank you.

Hello,

Tried booting it again and got this.

I think I fried the RSX, but I don't know why. I Added the 4x tantalum posted on the OP

Also, to mention, this console was working fine after countless of boot attempts giving YLOD. It wasn't making any artifacts before.

Hello,

I have been trying this afternoon, and I was able to get to the XMB, but then the image freezed. The thing is that if I move through the XMB I can hear the click and also the console can be powered without two beeps. But the image is frozen. Also, I could get to recovery menu and first boot menu at 1080p without any artifacts or freezes. If I go back to XMB at 1080p it freezes just after the PS3 boot logo, if I use the lowest resolution I can move some seconds in the XMB until it freezes the image again.

So do you think it needs a reballing or could it be the wires between the positive rails aren't big enough for the chip?. This is the next thing I want to try.

This is what I get after the logo. Before the logo no artifacts so far.
