PS3 Retrieve PS3 Data on PC via eid_root_key

So basically i have a FAT PS3 60GB. That had a YLOD and got repaired. Then some time later it happened again (maybe because i accidentally pushed it over) and smart me from like 6 years ago thought that its not a problem to put the HDD into the new super slim. When i put it in i obviously need to format it. Then i put it back into the FAT model after trying to give it a bit of life back with the hairdryer method and it still needs formatting which i did not do. Its been sitting here like that since it happened.
On the 60GB HDD there are still some photos and videos that my father only put on there that id love to retrieve.
Now my plan is to:
Get a new HDD for the FAT PS3 and have it fixed, put CFW on it, retrieve the eid_root_key and decrypt it so i can get my data off with a tool and onto my computer.
Is this possible or have i already made a horrible mistake?
If you have any other idea then id love to hear it. Hope someone can help.
Also i dont really have experience with CFW and such so please bear with me in case im a bit confused ;)

If You have ERK (EID Root Key) from console on which HDD was encrypted, then yes, You can retrieve all data without problems.

Of course do not put old HDD to this PS3 and format it because If You will loose all data. And one symptom is not promising... When You put this HDD to another PS3, she want it to format it, that's normal. You wrote that You reject this, which is good. But... putting it back to the old PS3 shouldn't ask to format it, until it comes from NOR model and firmware version installed in console doesn't match to firmware parts in VFLASH partition. This is not problem in retrieving data of course but if she want it format for any other reason than one I mentioned (and FATs with 60GiB HDD have as I remember NAND, not NOR memory...), data recovery can be a lot harder and needs some IT knowledge (yet still possible, at least partially).

So first, hack You PS3 (depend of fw You have on it). You have already CFW, then write Rebug 4.86.1, install Rebug Toolbox (it is part of the firmware, You will see it on a list under Install Packages), run it and choose option to dump ERK. Then send this file to PC via FTP or just copy to USB (FAT32 on MBR) via any file manager (i.e in multiMAN). If You don't have CFW but OFW, install latest and use bgtoolbox to patch fw (@bguerville ?) allowing You to install any CFW.

Would be great if You make sector by sector image on PC of this HDD, i.e by dd on Linux or HDD Raw Copy Tool (without compression!) on Windows. Yet be warned that Windows could ask about disk initialization which will overwrite PS3 partition table and makes You life even harder, so do NOT agree on this.

You need the eID BEFORE you do anything else if you want to save the info. So you gotta get the PS3 fixed. If you put a new HDD before getting the key the data is lost forever. As once you put a new drive it the previous will not be recognized by the PlayStation until you format it.

In theory if the console is fixed & works fine enough to install a 4.8x firmware on a new hdd, you should be able to dump the eid_root_key then retrieve the photos from the old disk with ps3 hdd reader on PC as long as the old disk is untouched, in other words no inserting it in another ps3 & be extremely careful when connecting it to Windows, do not let it "activate" (I think that is the term Windows uses in its pop up dialog but I am not entirely sure, I haven't seen that dialog for some time lol) the disk!
I suggest you read some documentation before you attempt reading the disk on PC, there are dedicated threads on ps3 hdd reader & probably some YT vids, it is always good to get some background in those cases.

However if the console cannot be revived, good bye photos guaranteed...
