PS3 RetroArch stops working after random period of time

Hello, yes - as strange it may sound, that's exactly what happens.

I've tried regular retroarch, retroarch CE made via ps3 community and this updated version with more cores and pink icon. All works ok yet after some time, sometimes one day, sometimes 1 month - i run retroarch from XMB and it goes back to XMB menu.

My solution so far is to backup my .cfg, history, savegames and remaps via FTP; remove retroarch, install it once again and move my files back.

Yet, it is a bit pain in the a**, therefore I would like to know why is it even happening? And is there any solution to it. I have plenty of space on my HDD, all games from HDD works without a problem and none of them seems to have any kind of issues. Therefore i do not think it is hardware problem, I mean hdd being old etc. (actually it is old but works well and quiet).

Hopefully someone can help me a bit here. Happy to provide any files that can help to trace the problem if needed.

More then likely your RetroArch.cfg is getting corrupt.

How do you close RetroArch? via the ingame XMB Quit or the RetroArch's Quit function in the UI,,
Use the app's Quit function. It will always save the retroarch and all cfg file's correctly.

Also every core is a different app essentially, so because they all look the same in RetroArch does not mean they will behave the same way. One core could have the potential for more of an issue then another core. So 30 cores may not corrupt the CFG file but there could be a core that does under a certain situation.

When it happens just go back and try and do it different next time
Closing different
Different Core
ect. to help isolate the problem.

When you have all the settings you like in your RetroArch.CFG file and save a copy and anytime you need to replace or overwrite the corrupted one you have it ready to go with all your settings intact.

Hi and thank you for reply,

Yet, I need to mention that I am pretty familiar with using retroarch and I am very aware about cores etc. Also, as I wrote:

I do not even see the menu as it happens. Nothing, XMB, black screen, back to XMB. And about your post:

I always close retroarch via it's own menu. My settings are very important for me, same as remaps I value a lot so I always have a backup of most important files.

It is just annoying to see something working one day and another it needs me to remove it, restore my files or i will not be able to enjoy it anymore.

As I said, i have no such problem with other homebrew apps or any other software on ps3, only retroarch. And i can upload (by which i mean restoring my old files, i just backup to my mobile via FTP and restore them by uploading them back to my ps3) my files just fine, same .cfg, history, remaps, saves etc - 100% same files but after reinstall it is all ok.

One thing I've noticed today as I was playing around with it. At some point I removed file retroarch-salamender.cfg; and guess what - it started working again. Had not much time to check what's inside it and what is it's purpose but guess I've just sorted my problems with retroarch. It is also probable that i've never made backup and restored this file as I never thought I needed it. Guess this is the file that was causing problems after a while.

EDIT:
Guess this salamander file is not only my problem. PS Vita guys had same thing going on as i've found on Reddit. And removing this file helped as well.

Do you have any idea what this file is doing and what settings does it keep?

Are you running games fron internal or external?

When I first started using it had alot of stability issues till I moved all my games and thumbnails (hard copy, not the inviisible auto-update ones) to my external Harddrive.
Now it's normally only when trying to get certain new games or cores working its susceptable to crashing..
And when it does, I just have the whole build backed up, even if it takes half an hour to copy over in Multiman.

Tried what you are doing, just kept having issues every time you changed anything in your settings, deleted something from a playlist ect ect.. I have read a few others say they had same thng, more stability from external..
I have a 2TB with all my ps1,2 + 3 games and all my retro roms, only about 80Gig space, runs fine..
Runs even better when you load them onto a 125gig stick (just retroarch games).. with a bunch of pace and smaller storage to read.

Same with my .prg in C64 games, crashes my jiffydos following directions and putting it internal, so I just repack them into D64 or D81 or something else that runs from external.
The only thing I run from internal is the Cannonball Outrun..I think..
