PS3 Should I go to NoBD cfw when optical drive only reads CD/DVD ?

Hello.
I have got a backward compatible 60GB model. (CFW since 2012). A few months back it stopped reading blu-ray disc. But reads CD/DVD well. I was thinking to remove the optical drive completely. (to increase airflow)

If I switch to NoBD cfw now, will I be able to change a new optical drive in future?

Do I need to backup something or I can just go to NoBD fw, then back to normal CFW and put in a new optical drive?

For now I am not interested in buying a new drive.

You shouldn't switch to nobd firmware.

If you want to win space in the case, you can remove the mechanical drive but keep the logic board connected. That way you can keep regular firmwares.
