PS3 Simple PS3 CFW question...

SoloNoco

Forum Noob
Hi guys, just modded my PS3 a few days ago for the first time, the only reason I did so was because my disc version of LA Noire was bugging out on the last mission, & wouldn't let me progress, so I got CFW &... Finished the game.

Anyway my question is, is the console still modded when I swap out my HDD?

I use 2 HDDs with this console & the one that was inserted when I installed the CFW obviously boots with the 'REBUG' title card. But when I put my other HDD in, it boots with the original 'PS3' title & there isn't any Multiman or anything in sight.

Reason I ask is, I want to go online, so is it safe to assume that I can go online with my clean HDD & I'm not risking any kind of ban? I'm just a noob & am unsure if the CFW applied any kind of change to the PS3 internals, beyond the HDD, thanks in advance (& sorry if this question has been asked a million times before, I looked for an answer to no avail...)

You would have to reinstall the custom firmware and not official I think I'm not 100% sure

it is still jailbroken yes. some files are stored on flash memory instead of hdd.

btw switching hdd can erase act.dat so you will have to reactivate ps3 or have backup file. if you dont have psn acct then that doesnt matter.

Keeping in mind nobody knows all the ins & outs of the banning system especially when games may use their own cfw detection system, using a swapped hdd is a little safer in theory but it's not sufficient, there is still a major risk of detection & ban.

On the hdd, you only get the part of the OS running in userland, whereas all the lower level stuff (lv1, lv2 as well as the different low level utility executables) is located in Flash memory.
When you swap a hdd, you only swap the XMB files with OFW version but all the low level files are still CFW version, lv1 & lv2 are both patched, and even if no payload could be loaded, custom syscalls are usable etc..

So on a nor console basically to have a proper dual boot system, you need 2 hdds & 2 NOR chips.
This can be done using an E3 flasher installed permanently inside your console. The E3 flasher's NOR chip can then be used instead of the PS3's, you can toggle between the 2 Flash memory chips. There is also a E3 e-SATA hdd adapter available to complete the E3 flasher & make a full dual boot system.

I should also mention that it would be possible to use the PS3 Toolset's Flash Memory Manager as a software solution for dual booting.
You would first have to create a ROS dump from OFW & another ROS dump from the CFW you are using.
When ready to toggle OS, use the Flash Memory Manager to replace the Flash Memory data with either of the ROS dumps before shutting down, inserting the appropriate HDD & rebooting. You could easily toggle ofw/cfw this way without the need for extra hardware.
