What happens to XRegistry.sys changes after software reinstall?

Hi guys!
I want to change a value in the XRegistry.sys file. To do that I will need to run custom software.
After I do the change I would like to fully revert to sony official software via update file on USB dongle. Will the revert to sony software change the XRegistry.sys value back to the default one?
I would like to add that I am very new to the PS3 modding scene, so I am sorry if I misunderstood something.

It will not but on OFW, some nodes will be ignored (e.g all related to DEX and QA).

Before You go to OFW, read flash, ERK and IDPS. Especially that currently there is no safe way back from fw past 3.55 using only software methods.

So what you are saying is that after software version 3.55 there is no guarantee that I will be able to fully reverse to the original non modded state of the console?

So he is saying you need to be on CFW to do this. And depending upon what you are trying to do it may still work on OFW. What are you trying to do? I know swap X/O works and a few other things.

And the reason he told you to grab those files it would allow you to access the HDD on a PC to recover data just in case. It has saved my butt a time or two.

Going back to OFW is pointless. And once You will do that, You cannot return to CFW in safe way if this be OFW 3.56 or newer (until bgtoolset will go back online; because 3.55 was last which USB was sufficient to hack). Take that in mind.
  • Flash dump is for hardware backup solution in case of brick or bad sectors.
  • ERK is for access to HDD outside PS3 (i.e to xRegistry.sys if this is NOR model of PS3).
  • IDPS is for changing ownership of trophies and saves (in case You need someone else save, spoof idps for drm in Singstar etc. etc.).
None of above three things You can do on OFW and no ERK reading on HEN.

Exactly. My reason for trying to do this is for swapping button on a JP version. I found out that I only need to change 1 digit in the registry from 0 to 1 and that's it.
Although the more I read into it the more I realize that this is such a complex thing to do and that is not just as simple a sticking in a USB stick and reinstalling Windows.
I think I will stick to it as it is and let it be.
My only need was swapping buttons, but the consequences are way to many. I understand that they might be dogeable as Berion explained above me, but I am not willing to go trough all that.
Thank you guys for explaining all this to me. Without you I would have gone in without knowing what might happen after.

So for what you want to do you can install HEN no need for CFW for this. Then use the xregistry app to swap X/O. Reboot the system and any hacks are gone but the change will stay till you swap a new HDD. I have done this for a few of my buddies that got JP BC PS3's and won't cause any issues.
