What version of CFW should I install?

Hello,

sorry to be that noob. I have been researching best I can. I have a 60GB launch PS3. I installed 4.85 HFW and went to the ps3xploint page and ran the flash memory manager (multiple times, hope that's ok). Now my PS3 is jailbroken? Do I need to reboot?

if this is the case then now the next step
I think is to install the CFW? I've heard rebug is good, which version do I use? Does it have to be specifically version 4.5 or 4.5.x? Once you have CFW installed can you update to the latest in a different way?

Hi....which do you think is a better strategy, doing folder rips or ISO's of my games? I've got a 1TB drive btw. I don't plan on going online, I just have a bunch of PS2/PS3 discs I want to load into the system. Are ISO's supposed to be more compatible? Thanks.

As Coro has already mentioned, ISO is by far the most compatible and far better than folder format. What I personally do is use multiMAN to rip my PS3 discs into folder format onto USB (FAT32), then on PC join any big files (4GB+) together using PS3 Tools Collection, deleting the unnecessary PS3_UPDATE folder (which saves ~256MB) and then creating the ISO using the makeps3iso option with PS3 ISO Tools. Then play from an NTFS partition on my external HDD, and yes the compatibility using this method is close to 100%.

Of course, a 1TB internal drive is quite a lot of space for games, so all you would need to do is place the created ISOs into dev_hdd0/PS3ISO - using FTP you can use multiMAN to do this, or if using a PS3 file manager (i.e. transferring from an NTFS partition external USB drive to internal HDD) my go-to is always ManaGunZ because I like the simplicity of its user interface.

Hi again,

I've run into a snag with the CFW firmware install. I tried to install it through both the regular menu and through recovery mode. In the regular menu it finds the version of rebug on usb and I accept the agreement, it gets to 70% and says the data is corrupted 8002F957. I tried a second flash drive and the same thing happened. When I try from recovery mode it just says data is corrupted. Any ideas? Do I need to run the ps3xploit again? Thanks.

Ok actually nevermind the firmware is installed ok I had not done the ps3xploit correctly.

back to the suggestions about the game files. You are ripping them and then converting them back to ISO to save storage space? I don't want to use any external drive to save space I want to put everything on the local drive. I'm assuming there is a way to just make an iso directly on the PS3 from the disc, but then it will take up a lot of wasted space then? If not then I have to rip the games on the PS3 to folders, copy them to my P.C., then make them into ISOS and copy them back, is that right? Thanks for your help.

I guess I'm also not understanding why you are using a fat32 device to store your folder format, which I assume is splitting up some larger files, only to have to rejoin them later. Does the MultiMan not support NTFS devices?

You can build ISOs from discs directly on your ps3, but every disc comes with an OFW update file of 256 mb, which is completely unnecessary and waste of space. If you have no plan of using Ext. Drive, then you can do the whole process on ps3 itself.
Copy disc as folder > delete PS3_UPDATE using any file manager > Build ISO.
And of course, if you don't want to go through all the hassle and 256 mb of space isn't that important to you, just do the iso thing.

Mm has NTFS support as Read-Only, While IrisMan can copy games on Ext. NTFS drive directly (Only as ISO).

Also, not every game has files bigger than 4gb.

Hello again,

Im haven't an issue with multiman, should I open a new thread? I downloaded the latest version, put it on my thumb drive and installed it with package manager. I am using the Resistance Fall of Man original disc. In the regular XMB the game loads fine. When I go into multiman and try to load from disc the screen goes blank and the console seems to be crashed. I have to hold the power button down to power it off. So I went back into multiman and ripped the game to ISO, so now I have a second listing of Resistance. I go to the one that says iso and when I launch that it just brings me back to the main XMB menu. Any suggestions? I will try with another game, thanks.

after loading iso on multiman, it should exit to xmb. after a few seconds the game icon should show up (like when you put in a disc). then press x while on the icon to start.

hmmmmm. That definitely did not happen with Resistance. It just stayed on a black screen. It might be just this game though I read a Reddit post where someone else was having an issue with Resistence and multiman. I put in Uncharted and ran it directly from disc in multiman it started no issues. I'm ripping the iso now.

Oh my bad I got you now. Yep cool Resistance worked fine this way. Strange that it did not work right off the disc. Thanks.
