Brief Context:
I've got this PS3 jailbroken with custom firmware that I've been using to backup games running evilnat 4.92 (I believe) and is a CECH-A01. This is my first time trying to dump PS1 games using MMcm and it just feels to be taking absurdly to me.

Full Context:
This is a model A backwards compatible PS3 I got to primarily backup my extended video game collection last year I finally got it frankenphated as the board had trace damage and the RSX on it was 100% bad. After I got it back from tech who repaired it he said that the Blu-ray drive was having trouble reading DVDs and suggested the laser was likely bad. He offer to remarry the drive with a replacement drive. I declined and did it myself using online tutorials and the custom firmware I have installed.

Update:
I came back to the PS3 after about an hour to check on the progress of the ISO and found the system turned off after turning it back on I did find an iso on the hard drive but it was incomplete and couldn't load so I guess this confirm something is wrong.

The red laser is bad as that technician said, you should've let them replace the drive

The Drive has been replaced just by me and not the tech. I can confirm that the console has no problem reading and playing PS1 games. I can also provide video evidence if needed

I tried this on 4 separate games all of which also booted on the Playstation 3 when you attempted to play them. I don't believe it is disc rot otherwise these games would fail to boot. However all of them exhibit this exact same behavior when the console attempts to copy them as an iso file. If I need to I can just attempt to dump these games using a computer but I would prefer the ability to use Multiman and do it directly on the console. If needed I can attempt to dump this on PC and checksum the game.

I search around and saw that some people had trouble doing this from MMcm and switched into Multiman mode. However my PS3 behavior didn't match what I was seeing in those posts/videos in fact when attempting to reinsert the disc to try in multiman mode this happened

additionally the disc graphic looked strange and multiman acted like it couldn't identify it

There are 3 laser diodes. One for cd, one for DVD, and one for bd. There are multiple versions of laser assembly with single and dual lenses also.

I think I had the exact same issue recently on my backwards compatible CECHA06 unit. It just refusing to back-up PS2 games in Multiman for whatever reason and spitting out the message that the "operation is not allowed". It does however play PS2/PS1 games straight from the disc perfectly fine, different regions and everything.

I also have another later phat PS3 model that I've been using on the side mostly to play PS3 games, but that one seems to be clear the operation without issues. It just creates a back-up of anything I throw at it - PS3 and PS2. Doesn't seem to be a problem at all. The only difference I've found between these two units is that the CECHA06 console has Multiman MOD on it, while the other one has Multiman BASE.

It might be worth trying to install Multiman BASE instead, and see if that works better for you? I haven't had the chance to actually try out this potential "solution" myself, and I have no idea if it would make any sort of difference at all. Not even sure if you can have both installed at the same time, lol. So take this as a throw in the dark.

Holy shit I think it actually worked

If it does work I'll add an updated image to confirm

Update: so it did work (which honestly is mostly what I care about)

there is a new issue though, of course. it won't run the copy unless I have it loaded from an external device

otherwise I just get this

Final update: I was dumping PS2 game and tried the Resident Evil 3 again and it just worked. I don't even know...

What a coincidence that I just happened to encounter the same issue a few days ago, haha. Glad that I could help you solve the problem! And thank you for confirming my suspicion about this being a Multiman MOD issue.

While you seem to have solved the second issue too, if this happens again you might just have to turn the applikation on and off again. Alternatively just use Multiman Base to back up games, and then play them with Multiman MOD. It's a bit cumbersome, but it might help. There's also the slight chance that turning on Multiman Mode in the applikation could help bypass that stuff.

Other than that, enjoy your backed up classics! Resident Evil 3 is probably my favorite, to be honest.

I imagine it would be helpful if anyone else with a CECH-A0X unit could confirm if this is happening to them too. At least in the case of me and No_One this has been related to those specific backwards compatible systems.

I think I may need to change my user name.

I don't think multiman MOD changed anything that big when it comes to PS1/PS2 games copying, @aldostools I think you might want to look into this

I'm replying to confirm that "multiMAN MOD" didn't make changes in the original behavior of multiMAN, except:
- Replaced the path where prepNTFS files are searched.
- Changed a few outdated HTTP links.
- Replaced 4.75 with 4.91 (This was for aesthetic purposes only)
- Replaced prepNTFS.self with a modified version of prepISO to add support to exFAT and other advanced features. This was an external modification to multiMAN.
- Added an external self to access Simple File Manager which has full support for exFAT and NTFS.
- Updated the theme.

All the changes made directly to multiMAN were done using HxD (Hex Editor).

Since MM's source code isn't public, any problems should be reported to DeanK. Although I doubt he'll respond.

I suppose the solution of using Multiman BASE to back-up PS1/PS2 games will have to do for us then. It's not a particularly big deal, and it's nice knowing that's at least some kind of work around.
