PS3 CECH-2504A shuts down after a few seconds

Hi, i'm new in this forum, i have a ps3 "early" slim (OFW, no hw mods) model which happens to have a big problem: whenever i try to turn it on, the fan spins, power led goes from red to green and after around 3~5 seconds power led turns off, the hdd makes a clicking noise, the fan stops and it turns off itself. The only strange thing i noticed is that the blue optical drive led starts blinking right before it shuts down.

I also tried to swap psu, optical drive and the psu cables with some known good from my 3004B "late" slim (HFW with HEN), tried replacing the thermal paste, but none of those things helped fixing the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hard drive clicking sound like the hard drive is bad?

Sudden shutdown like this sounds like a failsafe against something like a short or severe overheating.

Changing thermal paste can help, but depending on age and use, the thermal compound under the IHS may have dryed out. This can be fixed with a delid of the IHS and removing/apply new compound.

But before you go ahead with that, I'd hold up for another user to chime in that's a bit more knowledgeable in the hardware department. And you'll probs going to need a multimeter to do some probing for the problem.

Conect your ps3 hdd to pc
Open cmd and run as admin
Type diskpart (pres enter) then type list disk (press enter) It will list all the available drives.
Now type 'select disk (disk number for example: select disk 2)'

type 'clean'. This command will permanent delete all files and folders, and successfully clean up the disk.
CONGRATS get back your hdd to the ps3 a'd instal REBUG OR whatever cfw

I doubt that this is the problem as this user had already swapped the old HDD for a a new one and the shutdown still persists

This happened to me when I updated my ps3 to SSD I spent all day to get the solution so just follow what i wrote you up. The ps3 system needs a Raw hdd/ssd

he already swapped hdds so thats not the problem. and formating when you do not have too is bad advice.

Check your ribbon cable to your blue ray drive maybe?
Changed it with a cech-3004B, same exact problem. Putting the 25xx drive in the 3xxx one works without problems.

see if it will goto recovery mode...if it does, reinstall ofw.
The ps3 doesn't get even past the 2nd beep (considering 1st as pressing the power button and the 2nd as a "video settings reset", while still holding it).

The only thing it may be visible messed up is the CMOS battery, i'll test it asap to see if correct voltage is given.

The CMOS battery shouldn't cause this behaviour as the ps3 can boot without the CMOS, the time/date just won't stick.

The 2500 Series is full Tantalum, forget about the NECs when there is none, he has the Blackout, pretty common on the 2500 Series, it can be related to either a short on the BGA, CELL or RSX region, faulty PWM chip or Mosfet, its a pain to identify the cause, so the only solution is to throw it on the trash and buy a new unit, because is not worth it, 2 years ago, spent almost 2 weeks with Sandungas and the lads, diagnosing my 2500 Series, we tried many simple remedies like, pressing the BGA, swapping PSUs and even attaching a ATX one, none of them worked, so in the end, i always recommend to buy another unit, truth be told, unfortunately.

Should i try something else before trashing it? I think it's somethig very weird, because no one ever had this "flashing blue light" problem (it only happens if a disk is inserted/being inserted after exactly 2 seconds)...

What happens if you disconnect the BD drive and all his flat cables completly and turn ON the PS3 without them ?
