PS3 Defragment HDD

Hi. Is it possible to defragment the ps3 disk? Some say to enter recovery mode and restore database do tath but i don't know if this is a defragmentation. I'm looking for ways to optimize the HDD as much as possible since i use many games there.

You cannot defragmenting HDD because it is device... So You cannot do that on any kind of platform. You can defragment filesystem, which means moving clusters which files occupy as near to each other as possible. In case of PS3, You can do that on PC with "dev_flash/", "dev_flash2/", "dev_flash3/" and "dev_hdd1/" because they using FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems. You cannot do that with "dev_hdd0/" because it using UFS2 and there is no tools in Linux for that, and no tools in FreeBSD for changing byte order, mapping and decrypting tools. On PS3 there is no tools at all for doing that.

And besides that, it doesn't have much sense anyway, because dev_flashes aren't much in use, and in case of dev_hdd1 it is always clearing after booting console. *nix filesystems family however are designed and supports of them designed to fragmenting minimally as much as possible.

Since it's a similar topic to the question... while i was uninstalling multiman i turned off the console because it was taking too long and i thought it had crashed. Now the icon of the damaged file appears in the multiman icon and if i try to delete it takes a long time, it is practically blocked. If i try to install multiman again it gives me an error. The hhd is full, there is about 2gb free, is there a ps3 function to fix damaged files?

If You forcefully turn off console by switching the back switch, then in next boot PS3 should perform mandatory filesystem check (on HDD above 1TiB it will results in boot loop).

If she doesn't do that, then You can try Rebuild Database. When PS3 tries read unreadable/unretrievable resources, then she renaming it and moving entire content folder to something called BUP_* or CRASH_* (forgot name TBH).

There is no other ways on PS3 and on PC it will be risky due to experimental support of UFS2 in ufs.ko, which could kill fs in attempt to deleting such folder/files.

Safe way is... formatting drive. :|

hi guys i have a question regarding dev_hdd1 you mentioned that it clears everytime that the console turns off, my question is, do you know if i have an ssd installed on my ps3 do i need this partition, and also what does this partition exactly on the ps3 i think that is a cache partition that multiman creates but i dont know exactly what it does or how benefits the ps3, so it will be good to know about that one, thanks a lot and have a nice day

It's created and used by the PS3, albeit using HDD or SSD. dev_hdd1 must be there, and there is no chance of deleting it in order to have more space as the PS3 won't "know" that there is free space to relocate.

"dev_hdd1/" is used by System Update and all PS3 games. If You remove it, You will end with 2GiB hole and inability to run any game (but in practice, PS3 will want format drive on start anyway).

multiMAN don't creating any partition.
