PS3 Ps3 slim crashes upon slightly tapping the console.

A week ago i noticed my ps3 crashed when i inserted my charger usb, at first i thought it was something with the USB port itself but it wasn't the case, when I lightly tap the console or accidentally trip over it or even moving it over

I looked all over for any cases of this happening to the ps3 slim 3xxx but I coudnt find anything related to that. Sometimes it crashes in mid game with no physical contact (that's super rare) but sometimes it takes awhile for it to be stable enough to run a game and not crash on the game and the xmb screen.

Sounds like the solder under some component or chip is making poor contact.
Probably the solder cracked from the many heat cycles through the console's lifetime.
Does the problem persist if you put pressure on where the cpu and rsx are located?
If that is the case than it looks like one of the chips need to get reballed.

I forgot to note this but it crashes more, this time it randomly turns itself off and the red light turns off (not blinking) I have the console in a greatly vented area, i even opened it up and used an air duster can, I even tried pusing the power and eject to fan itself out. It might be the solder connections but other cases I see of this is the power supply is bad or not connected right.

I looked at my ps3 and i found one visible pin on the cpu that wasnt connected good, I wanna use the heat gun or blow dry method bjt im not sure if those metods are safe

Those are bad ideas,
Like i said before it looks like one of the chips need to get reballed.
Reballing the CPU will solve it.

If the PlayStation3 turns on but immediately turns on, thats on 2100 Series and onwards, this issue its known as BLACKOUT.

Usually can be summon to these things, CELL and RSX Mosfet Failure, PWM Chip Failure, CELL IC Failure or a short on the 12V Rail.

There is no conclusive fix for this issue, you will have to make a list and diagnose them one by one, until you fix the issue, keep in mind that reballing won't work, unless you warped the board, but what are the odds of that to happen.

Brazilian Technician forums, work extensively with this issue, so the fix is not conclusive, for some reballing works, and for some don't, but reballing has nothing to do with the BLACKOUT issue.

I had a 2504B with the same issue, i will tell you right away that the problem its neither the PSU or the Solder-Joints, ive tried them both by replacing the PSU, and apply pressure to the chips, both didn't work, there is a short somewhere that prevents the PlayStation3 to post, you just need to diagnose each part carefully with a multimeter, to check for any shorts on the motherboard.

Is almost imposible to take a look at the solder balls under CELL/RSX the gap is very tiny, and to look in that direction you would need to stick your nose to the motherboard
If i remember right there are a couple of points where can be seen, but is very hard and you can only see lets say... 10 or 15 (but under CELL/RSX there are hundreds of solder balls)

I doubt your problem is related with this... initially you should suspect first about the power supply, it could have some failure that mades the PSU output voltages inestables

Well,I jumped to a conclusion too quick...
Just to make sure please check if it happens when you apply pressure on the CPU/RSX,
I stumbled into few consoles that had cracked solder balls under the CPU/RSX,
Pressing on them i saw an improment,in some cases the RSX showed artifacts due to the poor contact,
In the moment i let go some of them went off while some of them became unstable.
In cases where the RSX has poor contact with the motherboard you either get a green light of death or graphical artifacts.
If you press on the poor contacted RSX the green light of death will turn into an artifacted image.

I played mw3 all night last night after applying pressure while my ps3 was open. Blackouts arent too common for me but sometimes it does crash on the starting xmb, but i know now that my CPU connection points are bad. When i did apply pressure i never tapped the console to test its sensitivity, but it never crashed in game which i played for a couple of hours.

I know now that it is my CPU and not my power supply, I did trip over my console one day and it hard crashed with the display still on, I think i did something to the solder points.

I'll use the heat gun meathod till I can get a full repair or just buy a new ps3, I have the 3XXX model so id be happy to just get a new one i can jailbreak. One thing i did not mention is that I have hen on this ps3, but the problem occured way before i installed hen, hen dosent have problems with my ps3, its only when I tap it or even just plug a flash drive in lol. If i do end up getting a new ps3 i might get either a fat or a 2xxx slim.

The heat can damage componentes near the CPU,That can be solved by covering the componentes with a thick material that can aborb a lot of heat woithout melting, but won't transfer it to the components,or you can just not use it on those areas -_-

It will definitely vaporize the thermal paste underneath the IHS,which will cause the console to overheat.

Yeah, that's true. I'll either wait till I can take it to get rebelled or I can do it myself, I just dont know where i can get a reball mold.

reballing requires a machine that costs between $800-$1,000, so you'd have to send it to someone. and, the going rate for that is around $80, so it's not worth it. might as well buy a new console then.

Or you can point a heat gun underneath the chip hoping it will melt the broken/cracked balls,
But doing so is highly risky,If one of the balls is broken then the other half can short between 2 different balls,
Also some balls may attach/jump themselves to a different location.
It can also burn the PCB if not careful enough.

Just telling... to me is hard to believe that the problem is not related with power lines, because you mentioned a couple of things that should not be ignored, sometimes small hints are the key to solve the mistery ;)

You said the PS3 crashed for first time when you was connecting devices to USB

Sometimes it crashes in mid game with no physical contact
Sometimes it crashes without physical contact

To test this possibility i think he should try an ATX power supply if he has one.
Also there is the possibility that the NEC TOKIN are the causing it.
Don't attempt anything permanent yet.

Also he mentioned he tripped over the console, should check for physical damage visually.

Yes, a test with an ATX PSU (or a sony PSU) are important to ride out posible culprits

The nec/tokins was replaced by simple capacitors in new PS3 models... but yes, should be considered part of the "power lines" too... are very important because are intended to work as a "electricity buffer" for CELL and RSX... so are critical

But all other stuff and components related with power lines could make the PS3 to shut off, there are a bunch of voltage regulators in the motherboard, incase one of them have a failure the motherboard cuts all the power lines
Thats why i was giving importance to what he said about his PS3 crashing when he connected a USB device

Update: it fully died today.
I turn it on and it dosent make it to the xmb menu, the green light will stay on for a bit then it will turn off the light without the red light showing.

Its fucking depressing when i have to deal with always not having money for myself, even if its just a little bit, thing is everytbing i have always fucks up after a year of 2 after buying it, im so fucking sick of everything in my fucking life breaking because i have nothing else to do and no money to fix it. People always assume I just break shit because im careless or dont treat kt right and it pisses me off because i try with every fiber of my being to protect and care for the only little things I have left to enjoy myself. God I fucking hate ps3 slims. I had a ps3 fat from near release date untill 2 years ago when it finally stopped working because it would crash when i try to launch any application, plus the disk drive stopped working as well, had no money and still dont have money to fix these 2.
