Does anybody know if I can use 330 uf 2v compactors to replace the Nec tokin compactors? I know it says use 2.5 volt ones but I am wondering if using 2 volt ones will work or does that .5 volts really make a difference?

It's capacitors, not compactors. May I ask why are you replacing them exactly? You do know there are better ways to diagnose the errors before you jump to any unnecessary replacements.

Sorry if my phone's messed up auto correct bothered you. I diagnosed the issue by running test on all of the other hardware and when I popped off the top of each nec-tokin capacitor they each had areas in the corners where they had turned brown. So even if that's not the main issue, it is a issue and it will have to be fixed one way or another

Oh good. Sorry I thought you were new and wanted to quickly get rid of the caps because it used to be what everybody else was doing a while ago until better ways of checking ylod faults have surfaced.

Which tests have you run though ?

I tested the power supply, I checked the hard drive and even put in a known good one,then i ran tested where the capacitors are and it appeared that when the PS3 turned on, the nec tokin chips would receive power but not send it back out. Then i took a known good board and examined the difference. everything tested good except for the nec tokin capacitors. At that point I was still doubting myself because it didn't make sense how every capacitor on the board was blown. i already had new capacitors (4 of them) so after i noticed the browned edges, I replaced that one. The PS3 still would not startup properly. I popped off the next cap and it was even worse. I got tired of it and popped off all of there covers and there were only two of them that weren't messed up. I just ordered 30 330uf 2v caps from ebay but then realized that it says 330uf 2.5v caps are needed. Im just wondering if it will work with 2v ones or if I'm screwed
 
These are not conclusive tests. The power isn't sent most likely because you have some type of a powersequence error so syscon shuts everything down. Please research how to do syscon diagnostics.

Look, I just need to know if I can use 2v caps for the nec tokin replacement. That's all

You have to get capacitors with the same esr do not get those yellow things waste of money
 
And it's not recommended to use lower than original values.

Well you can't quite do that as lowest esr I've found is 5mohms and necs are 1.0 I've found Tants of the proper size right up to 1500uf tho so no need for that 470 crap reall just a lot more soldering

I was talking about voltage and capacitance. I think @RIP-Felix knows about about matching ESR.

You can probably get away with 2v. Try them and see.

Worst case scenario a voltage spike causes them to blow like a fuse. Tantalum likes to fail explosively, so you'll get a startling bang and a white puff of toxic magic smoke. And then you're back to square one. Luckily though, they'll take the bullet for the CPU/GPU and the chips will not be harmed. This is why you shouldn't go over the 2.5V rating. But going under? 2.5V is well above any voltage spikes that "should" happen in normal operation.
As long as there aren't any voltage spikes that exceed 2V, you should be fine. But it is cutting into the safe margin. I think it should be okay, but IDK for sure.

Out of curiosity which ones did you get? Also, what model PS3? I ask, because ESR/ESL does matter. You may be interested in this post too. It makes soldering easier and I recommend some caps.
