PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

I don't like to argue with nobody about methods. I just live in my world and when a toking have oxidation inside I have extra work to do.

Reballing is the goto solution for a reason. It's a common problem. It's more an issue with the consumer electronics industry as a whole. They allow FCBGA to be use in hot AF chips whereas military, space, and automotive sectors are FAR more stringent about allowing BGA anything into their products. I guess that makes sense for a misslie, rocket, and car. If they malfunction, someone can die. The worst that can happen in the electronics industry is your house burns down! You know...nothing life threatening!

50C or less for FCBGA IMO! It's not like we don't have other technology. It's just greed! FCBGA makes it cheap and break sooner, so you have to buy another. Still want to buy that RTX-3080 knowing this?

Yes..lol!

Working on 90nm is a gambling. Had last sem001 full syscon dump dead gpu with 2.0 ohms on board/out . Well after reball didn't work. So took another with 2.5 ohms it is working. Don't ask me why but 90nm rsx once dead it is dead. No ram bleeding at all just like that. On all units with 65nm and 40nm rsx I really don't have a problem working 12 hours in 2 days, I'm confident it will work again.

^^ my A01 has being moded to its heart, both chips delidded :D and its ghoin strong, no issues what so ever, and sometimes i got it frun for upto 2-3 days :D
oh and well, wooo what? gimme gimme gimme a 3080 after midnighthehe ^_^ wel im still on a 980 but i will get a 1080ti soon, that will last, cuz im primarly video editing but he 980 will still get used as a second card for monitors and support :D

hehehe awesome bro, u right, i dont know i should have said u can reball, but SMAAALY things :))) not a 90nm CPU witch architecture works like difference between mars and jupiter xD well i know, and the necs can be an issue but iputted nsc in my video explaining this a bit more cuz i know shit bout that capasitor, on pc with the VRMS i know quiet a lot but on a console caring mutch bout the hardware is a bit too mutch for me, and i could even work on it, cuz yeah i got tons of GPUs laying arround but so solder arm, had thatt all in my old apartment and i didnt worked on stuff that heavly anymore, more like pc shit and helping ppl out softwarewise with windows or anything else, since not everyone has a device so fucked up as the PS3 is ;), my J04 is giving up the ghost, but i will keep it :D, tomorrow imma gettn a slim for like pfff: 30-40 bucks and delidd and then install hen to increase the fan speed to a good pc like level ;) and drill holes in the top part of the plastic where the fan is under it :) im a bit too sick of tinkerin arround with the ps3, iver already had 20 ps3s in my life, why should it be annother one, at some point i also have enouth.
evn tho i already had something like 20 ps3s round about xD

then the new slim that imma get tomorrow also vbeaks then im done for it and keep only one ps3 (a01) for offline crap and have to sacrafice onlineplaying, thats wha imma always have 2 ps3s, each one for a different usecase,
at one pint i had a 3th one to teszt shit out for friends and my few ppl in my modding clan at hen/cfw if they couldnt ;)

Yeah, chalk it up to bad bumps. VDDC is the main issue and more likely to show low resistance when burned out, but yeah it's not 100% since the other VDD's could be bad too. Did you only ohm test VDDC or the other 6 as well (eg, VDDIO, YC_RC_VDDIO, VDDA, VDDR, VDDQ, $ PLLVDD)? Without a pogo-pin test jig for all the pins, any one of them could be short.

It would be lovely to have a jig to just fit an rsx into that ran an ohm test on all of them and informed us of any below a set threshold (say 2 ohms).

Yeah, my 970 is stilll rockin like dokken! 1080p no problem. 4K, not so much...lol! I spent the last year video editing on it and it ran fine. 2 years ago I got a 780Ti on ebay for $160ish. It benched the same as my 970, with fewer features of course. I was going to put it into my Arcade, an emulation PC with a custom frontend theme I Made, but I got sidetracked (with PS3's). A 780Ti is overkill for most games anyway. 8 years old and going strong (just about to loose NVIDIA support though. Oh well, it's been a good run!).

Honestly, GPU prices are insane! WAY OVER PRICED for the gaming performance!

Been looking on rest of sides on board. Nothing special. I will clear tomorrow and check with confirmation of every value just as note. Nothing to guide people but I personally don't give them anymore attention on 90nm. If they work with or without reball is fine if not scrap. We have modchip to test newer versions of rsx.

:D-)-<
damn youre my guad, well yeahhh brooh -.- the 970 has the 3,5gig issue there, a 780ti would i pic for sure, a decent OC on it and well 500mb more ram, tho not mutch but in thoez dayz u could almost take good use of ever MB u got more it getz eaten up by todayz games :P ^.^ im not a cat but well ewen a cat wouldnt be as pics with food as the games in vram xD

lookz good of cource but i hope that would be ya last reballed ps3 tomorrow :P

but broo the GPU prices are goin down good in the US and here in Austria we also makin progrezz ^.^ yo u can get a decent 980ti if u good enouth with it with the 6gigs for like 200-250 or go my route and go for a 1080ti ( some like 400-450 ) or 1080 at least (450-500 some a lil bit more ^^) then u got 8 on the non ti and 11gigs on tha ti and that an equivalent of a 2080 bro :D but way cheaper :*

woops, i mean the prices are backwartz lolz but well ure allright, and if not grad a 300 buck 1070 but thatz still a :* card if u dont expect so run pentagon with it xD and u still ahead of a ps5 at least cuz we dont wanna lag behind consoles bro :(

buzt let me say with ya 970 bro u can still have a decent time just make sure u grab a nice fragrance for her and make a good meal and put in some music xDD
:sfun tv:

Silly question, maybe -- the rsx is not through-hole chip, but there's all those solder points on the bottom side of the board -- do those match the rsx pin-out? I realize the board is six layers deep, so probably not, but maybe some of the pins do match it? Otherwise, why bother putting them there?

I think the only way to know for sure is to test a board without the rsx in there, so maybe @vyktormvmpay25 has one laying around that we can find out? Vyktor, do you mind testing that? Even just a few points might tell us.

Edit -- looking at the pictures, that was a silly question indeed! There's only the line filters over there, not any solder points. I don't know why I thought there was anything else in there...

Dudez, pls rather delidd the cpu and would be fine, why care bout this too mutch? i hopefully will meat him up tomorrow again so he does get away from reballing :P ;)

I would probably re-word your last sentence as that you should replace the fuses with the same specification part, not exact part.
So case size, fuse voltage/current rating, fuse blow type etc.
Manufacturer and part number should not matter.
The problem with the part numbers in the schematics is that they all appear to be Sony Internal numbers.
Sony did not make all those parts. They sourced them from a variety of component manufacturers.
The other issue with the parts listed is a lot of the IC's listed have been discontinued for years, so if it's an IC that goes you are stuck having to salvage them from other machines.

I can search one odd ball parts site(under 2 company names) for the fuse, but it tells me nothing about its specs and its out of stock anyway.

I am just going to go with a Fast Blow as at least it will blow quickly if there is a problem down the line which I am suspecting there is.
Can get 10 of them(most minimum orders start at 10) from any major component supplier in proper brands for the same money as that Sony part number one.
As long as it is a 3216 case it will just solder straight on.

I actually am down the road from two of the biggest component suppliers in Australia. RS Components and Element14.
My guess is I can't do pickup as we are under draconian stay at Home orders. Hate paying shipping which will cost more than the product when I can literally ride my bike to the place!

I have printed the schematics on A3 at work.
Just big enough that I can read the text.
Also printed the board physical layout on A1(actually 4xA3's joined together)

I have now been able to go through and highlight the circuits that are supplied by Fuse 6001.

It is now looking like I may be able to tie Fuse 6001 being blown and the Tokins + Surface mounts caps.
As I said before my Tokins and surface mounts caps are all shorted to ground.
The +5V MISC supply feeds the IC's that then feed the Tokins.
This +5V MISC comes from Q6002 + O/P which is the one and only component directly on the O/P of Fuse 6001. Yes there are some other caps associated with Q6002 but they were easy to check and are not shorted.
Q6002 feedas alot of other IC's that then feed items like the BD drive, HDD, USB ports etc, but just the fact that I have a short on the Tokins/SMD Caps and that fuse is blown has me very concerned now. Not exactly an easy place to diagnose.

@RIP-Felix
RSX_PLL_VDD_BLUE=1,541ko
RSX_PLL_VDD_GREEN=1,562ko
RSX_VDDC=2,0 ohms ~2,1 ohms
FBVDDQ=130ohms
VDDIO=172 ohms
VDDR=644ko
YC_RC_VDDA=7,47ko
YC_RC_VDDIO=1,483ko
Think something under ram or dead ram somehow i remember out for this is nearly 140 ohms on FBVDDQ.May work at 120 ohms .Checked edge of ram epoxy no cracks .
Edit
@marciolsf
Is easy with service pdf for COK001,COK002, SEM001. And most boards up to 40nm rsx footprint is quite same.
