PS3 Upon start, fan spins up very loudly, blinking RLOD

So I bought a broken PS3 thinking I could do Naked_Snake's Tokin replacement, but it seems my 60GB EU PS3 has a totally different problem.

When I first got it, I turned it on, and was amazed to see that it booted and I could see the PS3 logo (I unplugged the HDD). But the fan kept stepping up and getting worryingly loud so I shut it down. The air out the back wasn't hot at all, but the fan was spinning like crazy.

So it's just overheating, right? Took it apart, found too much thermal paste, cleaned it all up, put it back together.

This time, it turns on, the fan spins up, then it really spins up loudly, and then I get 3 quick beeps, twice. The fan stops and I get a blinking RLOD. Nothing ever appears on the screen.

Does anybody know what might be the problem?

EDIT: even though it's a blinking RLOD, looking from the Youtube videos this must be the famous YLOD...

That happend to me also, but mostly of two things, either the RSX IHS wasnt aligned properly, or you delided it and left the glue, which creates a barrier with the IHS and the die, making inproper contact, which makes the fan go crazy as soon as you turn on the console, or the heatsink wasnt secured in palce.

If you delided the RSX or CELL, clean the residue from the chips, if you havent delid them, check if the heatsink is properly attached, and every bolt is secured, i had 60Gb heatsink bolts snapping on me, without noticing it.

I think either this problem occurs because you didnt change the thermal paste properly you have to do in the correct way if that also not solves the problem then try reballing but its difficult and dont do it on your own if you dont know how to and do you have webman installed ?

I haven't delidded them. I just took the heatsink off again, and rescrewed the bolts on, making sure to tighten them evenly. In the end all screws were just tight enough not to turn anymore, but not tighter. The fan still spins up as if there was an emergency cooling situation.

It should work without the thermal paste. And it shouldn't reach an emergency cooling situation so quickly.

Perhaps it's better to not worry about the fan spinning up, and continue with the capacitor replacement?

So let's recap a little bit, when you turn it on, does the console operate normally, or it shuts down after, lets say 20 seconds?

If it operates normally, but with an very loud fan, with none of the mentions above, chances are the thermal paste under the IHS is dry, this is really crucial, as even when replacing the paste on top of IHS isn't enough, the die is literally killing themselfs.

It operated normally once, when I first got it and plugged it in immediately. Even then, the fan was gradually stepping up into a roar. So I took it apart and cleaned it and put it back together again.

Now, it stays green for a second or two, and then YLOD, blinking RLOD before anything comes onto the screen, but this time, the fan jumps immediately from normal speed to what must be 100% speed before shutting off due to the blinking RLOD.

I can say that something similar is happening to me. The fans going full speed at just the start of the console has nothing to do with thermal issues (from what just happened). To resume:
Bought a CECHG that only gave image once, the first time I turned it on. Don't remember if it shut down itself, but after that, the console went with fans at full speed and YLOD next. What I did:
I removed the 4 NEC TOKIN that are beside the CELL/RSX. I tested it and the console started just normal, I didn't even have the need of using new capacitors, but as I expected, the fans will go on full speed just in a few minutes. So What I did next was delidding the RSX but not CELL (that glue is fkng concrete now), tested it and now the console gives me blackscreen for a seconds and then YLOD. It seems when it tries to give image there's a problem with the RSX, and I believe now I need a reballing :/

Tried putting some 470uf from a SS PS3 I have, but there's no changes. I'm waiting for a package of new capacitors, I'll try those and a reflow. Hope that's it.

So, about your console, try to remove some NEC TOKIN and replace them with the 470s. In these situations don't expect too much, the amount of problems those old PS3 have is huge.
