Soooo I opened a few ps3s at the same time to repair the ylod and I labeled all the bd drives so I knew which one went to which motherboard but the labels fell off so now they're all mixed up. I've tried every combination of board to drive and none of them boot games, bd movies, DVDs, or ps1 games. So I'd like to just remarry the drives to the motherboards but here's the issue. One of them is ofw 3.15 and the other is 4.60 can I upgrade to 4.90 with an unmarried bd drive connected or does it have to be a married one in order to upgrade? The 4.60 I should be able to install cfw right off the bat but I read that 3.55 or lower needs a flash writer and can't be modded with ps3 tools unless the ofw is upgraded. Also can I just use the regular evilnat build or do I have to use NOBD? I do have a modded psp if that helps at all. And lastly once I remarry the drives can I revert back to ofw and completely wipe the cfw off the console or will that un-marry the disc drives again? Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

So, you can upgrade with an unmarried drive to a recent firmware. It just won't read discs.

The 3.15 one you can just upgrade to a CFW directly, no need to install anything in between. The 4.60 one you'd need to jailbreak with the flash writer or bgtoolset first.
When on 4.90 evilnat you need to dump your ERK (eid root key) to a flash drive, enter factory service mode and then remarry the drive and then exit the FSM again.
Once you confirmed the drive works again you can just install the 4.90 OFW and have a stock console again.
