PS News "Remastering by emulation" - Sony's (new?) Backwards Compatibility solution?

  • 8,835
  • 6
Emulating older Video Games on newer Platforms aren't a easy task, no question. Although this is one of the most desired features wished by many Users no matter which platform they support, which is of course understandable. A lot of older Game Titles still shares the Charme and Nostalgic feelings, especially when played for the first time back when they got released for their original platforms. And a lot of Users still asks for having the chance to play their older "Classics" even today. They prefer the Original Release compared to "Remastered" Versions for newer platforms or when Console Manufacturers tries to give those previous mentioned feelings back to the users by releasing a "tiny piece of Hardware" with the look of the same old platform but having half the size and calling them "X Mini" or "X Classic". But while Sony does such mentioned things, it seems that they are also still in research for a new solution regarding Backwards Compatibility, as their newest Patent Application suggests.

Update: picard (a.k.a. 3141card) has released a homebrew app (available here) that changes the reserved space from 8% to 1% automatically. Running the app again will revert the changes. https://mega.nz/file/zdk1lKqZ#aj4WFdOeosH_ncIB5flNtUxPs341PSYaXdLF2DdA45A
PS3 Unlock HDD Space by picard (aka 3141card) All credits to einsteinx2 on psx-place.com for his great tutorial: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/t...l-space-on-the-ps3-internal-hard-drive.20773/
HOWTO:
  • Install the package on your custom firmware PS3 and run it. It finds the active superblock of the gameOS partition and do the necessary patches. Usually 8 percent of the memory is reserved, the app sets this value to 1 percent.
  • The optimization value is set to 1, for minimize disk fragmentation.
  • The changes are permanent. The changed active superblock is written to the HDD with the system fs umount of the gameOS partition.
  • Running the app again restores the original values, if desired.
You use this app at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage caused to your PS3 system!
If my PS3 app was useful to you, I would be very happy about a donation :) https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/3141card picard (aka 3141card) -- (Original Post Continued Below) --
Need some extra space on your internal PS3 HDD, if so then perhaps @einsteinx2 may have a genius method for unlocking upto 8% of space on your Internal HDD, while the space is more then likely allocated for performance reasons by Sony (use this guide at your own risk), some of this saved space could be considered overkill, as the creator of this method makes a valid point that some of this saved space on larger HDDs is more then some of the early model PS3 complete HDD size, so its likely some of that space allocation is a bit overkill on the part of Sony. einsteinx21 has provided a great tutorial found below explaining in detail about this recent discovery

Maybe you was already wondering. Today we already have the 21st of September and there is still no Progress Report from August available? But don't worry, the great Team behind RPCS3 didn't forget to keep you updated. Actually, the reason is very simple why they kept you uninformed which was even worth to wait. Not only that a lot of AAA Game Titles saw huge improvements in playability, they also crossed multiple new milestones. RPCS3 now supports over 1000 (in words: "ONE THOUSAND") Game Titles which are fully playbale! Yes you read it right. How amazing is that? And it's getting even better. When we look into the same Month's Progress Report from last year, RPCS3 supported roughly 400 Game Titles fully playable, which was very good as well back in that day. But getting more than double of Game Titles fully playable in only 12 months shows how strong this Emulator and it's Developers behind this Project are. So before you need to wait any longer because of this introduction, here are the updates.

(UPDATE {v1.225}: See Bottom of Article) Developer @White Dragon has been trying to port OpenBOR Plus to the PS3. When the developer ran into some bottlenecks (Memory Leak issues) on the PS3 port, the dev posted this thread here in the psx-place forum seeking advice from scene developer's, After various trial and error's from the discussions the developer reached a "EUREKAAAAA!!" moment and success arose, as the port was now operational on a CFW enabled PS3 (not supported on HAN as this is a PS3 Homebrew). This homebrew engine is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine and has a rich gaming library of many beatem up games, This engine has been ported to the PS3 and runs on various other platforms like the PSP / Wii / Android to name a few. See additional details about the project and more about this PS3 port in the details provided below.
PS4 BwE PS4 WiFi/BT Patcher & Extractor v1.0

We know developer BwE from the PS3 Scene with prior releases of BwE NOR/NAND Patcher & BwE NOR Validator for the PS3, but now the developer has turned his attention to the PS4 recently. Which we have seen the dev hanging around the virtual halls here at psx-place forums and the ps4 dev has released BwE PS4 WiFi/BT Patcher & Extractor v1.0, this tool is used to fix DualShock 4 syncing issue. If your controller only sync's in SAFE MODE on the PS4, then this tool could more then likely fix the issue. However, If your PS4 controller does not sync even in safe mode, then sadly it may be a more serious (hardware potentially) issue. :

PlayStation News [Opinion] How to Control Scams & Frauds in the Scene(s)
  • 14,778

There has been various fakes and imposter's hitting the scene(s), something we have seen over the years but it seems gaining a bit more attention and fooling more people then usual. To get a grasp on the situation we must realize what has changed from past generations compared to now. Social Media comes to mind and maybe is the biggest difference as many dev's are choosing platforms like twitter and facebook to release projects. In my view this is bad for various reasons, such as documentation of the community , but the biggest issue it opens the door for scammers to exploit unsuspecting user's and they have.... Its going to take a bit of habit changing/reverting trends but i think the scene(s) can limit these scams, here are some of my personal views about these issues ..
